‘No confusion at all as Warbler and Curtis finally prevail’ |
|
October 27th
2023: So, the 2nd practice event for the return of the Balnarring Invitational
Tournament (BIT) and the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic (TSCC) was again a
raging success albeit it in a cut-down version and without the controversy
and confusion associated with last year. |
||
Limited turn out: This year the
turnout at Flinders Golf Club was limited with only 7 players teeing off in
the main events, namely the Balnarring Invitational Tournament and Tulum
Sands Callaway Classic. This was because accommodation was very limited this
year (few beds at Nurse Min’s and no rental next door) turning the event into
a Mini-BIT. Quality on the tee: So, the first
of the two groups that teed off at Finders GC contained Pup, Maroon
Breasted Warbler, The Bloke and Curtis followed by Thombei
the Mist, Stavros the Greek, and Nurse Min in the second group. It
was clear from the outset it was going to be a tough and gruelling
competition (See BIT and TSCC Player Groups). Quality on course: And that is
how it turned out with quality golf on display all day. Perfect examples
included Curtis’s four NTPs, yes four!! Then there was Pup’s
sensational longest drive on the 17th and The Bloke’s best
off the stick overall (91,14,77). Clearly the near perfect conditions weather
wise and course wise inspired all competitors (See On course at the BIT and
TSCC) Warbler gets a BIT: As readers
will know, there are two events run in conjunction with each other using the
same score card. The 1st was the BIT which is based on nnomads GC handicaps, in which the Maroon Breasted
Warbler (100, 29, 71) easily won the event by four strokes from Nurse
Min (103,29,74), with Curtis (92,16,76) and Thombei
the Mist (98,22,76) coming in equal 3rd place. Curtis gets a cup: The 2nd
event was the TSCC which is based on a Callaway handicap calculated on the
day, in which Curtis (92,20,72) easily won by three strokes from The
Bloke (91,16,75) and Nurse Min (103,28,75) in equal second place,
with Thombei the Mist (98,22,76) and
the Maroon Breasted Warbler (100,24,76) a further stroke behind in
equal 3rd place (or 4th place depending how you call
it). Just deserts for the two winners: These two sets of results were
particularly sweet for this year’s winners because last year Curtis
and the Maroon Breasted Warbler were both thought to have won
an event (including being presented with the trophies), but were stripped of
their titles after the event when it was discovered there were mistakes made
when calculating the results. This resulted in Thombei
the Mist winning both events and justifiably so (because he really did
win both events – see last
year’s BIT event report). So, this year the results were checked very
carefully and the outcomes were confirmed as true and correct without any
debate, confusion or controversy. Riotous presentations: Well, you can
imagine the delight shown by both winners as last year’s winner Thombei the Mist presented the trophies to
the 2023 winners, Curtis, and the Maroon Breasted Warbler. “I
would like to thank my sponsors …” started out the Warbler as he
held up his well-earned BIT trophy. “I would just like to say having an 8
and a 9 is always good in a Callaway” smiled Curtis as received
the TSCC trophy for 2023. Winners are Grinners in 3-Man Team Ambrose event: On the following day, the 3-man Team Ambrose event was run at
Rosebud Country Club in which Team B (73,12,61) easily beat Team A (77,12,65)
in a fantastic warm down event. Of note was the fact that this year’s BIT
winner, the Maroon Breasted Warbler, and this years TSCC winner, Curtis,
were both on the winning Team B along with Stavros the Greek. “I
knew it was a shoe-in when I saw who I was playing with” mumbled Stavros
as he grinned at the camera during the Team presentations. The Club
committee congratulates Maroon Breasted
Warbler and Curtis on their fantastic wins and indeed all winners on both
days. The Committee is again very impressed with the quality of the event
organisation and declares this second practice event to be an excellent
rationale for the return of the fully blown BIT and TSCC in future years. The committee
also reminds members to book early for the next major nnomads
Golf Club major event – The ‘Melbourne
Cup Cup’ in November. See you there. |
