‘Confusion reigns as Thombei appeals through the Mist’

October 15th 2022: So, the practice event for the return of the Balnarring Invitational Tournament (BIT) and the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic (TSCC) was a raging success with all the controversy one would expect at a marque nnomads Golf Club major competition.

Warm-up Ambrose team event: The weekend started with an Ambrose teams event run at the Rosebud Country Club sponsored by Clive Palmer who, as a life member, was able to organise free games for all except one player. Many thanks to Clive!!

Ten players in three teams stepped onto the 1st tee including Clive Palmer himself, the Maroon Breasted Warbler and Nurse Min in the 1st Group, Markus Octavious, Bobbie Boy and Mild Colonial Boy in Group 2, and Pup, Clean Phil, and Stavros the Greek in the final group (see teams event payer groups). The course was in beautiful condition despite the weeks of rain prior to the event, setting up a fiercely competitive competition (see on course at Ambrose team event).

The best team won on the day: At the end of the day the team scores were close with Group 3 (net 66 strokes), edging out Team 2 (net 69 strokes) with Team 1 close behind. The committee congratulates Pup, Clean Phil, and Stavros the Greek on a superb performance without any controversy at all.

Great turn out for the main events: So, the turn out on the Saturday at Flinders Golf Club was excellent with 14 players teeing off in the main events, namely the Balnarring Invitational Tournament and Tulum Sands Callaway Classic.

Confusion from the start: However, things began to go wrong at the very beginning due in part to a shotgun start on the 12th, 13th, and 14th holes. For example, Group 1 containing Pup, Curtis and Mild Colonial Boy decided to tee of the white tees on the 14th which were the shortest tees on the course (normally reserved for seniors). A somewhat confused Group 2 containing Stavros the Greek, Clean Phil, Bobbie Boy, and JoJo thought they had better follow Group 1 and also use the white tees. However, Group 3 back on the 13th hole containing Freddie Five Iron, Markus Octavious, Irish and Slugger teed off on the blue tees (the logical and correct tees), as did Group 4 back on the 12th hole with Thombei the Mist, Nurse Min, and the Maroon Breasted Warbler. (See BIT and TSCC Player Groups).

More confusion on course: If various groups playing off different tees was not bad enough, when Group 1 was on the 1st hole, the Flinders GC Professional came out and told them they needed to play off the blue tees. So, Group 1 then swapped to the blue tees from the 2nd hole onwards as did Group 2 after getting a phone call from Group 1. Meanwhile Groups 3 and 4 continued on their merry way playing off the blue tees throughout. Of note was the fact that for some longest drive holes and some Nearest-the-pin holes different groups were teeing off different tees. That said, the course was in good condition, the weather was kind and a good time was had by all. (See On course at the BIT and TSCC)

Confusion with the results: After the game, the tour players retired back to Chez Mins, where a lot of appropriate warming down was conducted and the results were calculated. As is normally the case, every card was double checked by someone from another group before the final outcomes were derived and the presentations began. Little did anyone know that Thombei the Mist’s score was not added up correctly. In fact, his score was overestimated by 10 strokes which put him out of contention in both events but we will come back to that.

Confusion over handicaps: It should be noted that various groups playing off different tees for part of the game led to quite some debate about what to do. For example, the Maroon Breasted Warbler thought Groups 1 and 2 should be disqualified. “Yeah, wipe the bastards out” he declared loudly during the discussions. However, Curtis thought an adjustment could be made. “Settle down, Warbler, we can adjust the handicaps appropriately” he mumbled as scrambled to come up with a way of not being disqualified. In the end and after some pushing and shoving, the difference between player handicaps for each tee (whites and blues) was calculated which in short, resulted in 2 strokes being taken off Group 1 handicaps and 3 strokes taken off Group 2 handicaps. The results were then calculated using this approach.

Confusion over NTPs and Longest drives: Of course, there was also heated debate about the Longest Drives and Nearest the Pins. “You can’t have an NTP competition when different players are using different tees can you?” suggested the Maroon Breasted Warbler. “But my Longest Drive was played off the blue tees so its legitimate” pointed out Mild Colonial Boy. “Yeah, but the only NTPs were won by guys playing off the whites which is just not fair” complained Slugger who played the entire game off the blue tees. And so, it went on. In the end it was easier just to give a ball to all NTP winner (Curtis and Bobbie Boy), and LD winner (Mild Colonial Boy), and be done with it.

How we thought it was: So, the presentations went on with Nurse Min winning the ‘Oh my Gourd’ award for the most outrageous act on the course (missed the ball twice when teeing off, then hit the ball a few feet, before finally getting it off down the fairway – So funny when Warbler described the scene), JoJo winning the NAGA award, Mild Colonial Boy wining the Best off the stick (89,13,76), and the LD and NTPs as described above.

Then came the results for the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic in which the Maroon Breasted Warbler (105,34,71) was thought to win by 2 strokes over Curtis (90,17,73), with Mild Colonial Boy (89, 15,74) a further stroke behind in 3rd place.

Then came the results for the Balnarring Invitational Tournament in which the Maroon Breasted Warbler (105,29,76), Curtis (90,14,76), and Mild Colonial Boy (89, 13,76) were thought to have come equal 1st place. As usual, this led to a play-off between these three players which came in the form of a chip-off in the back yard (see play-off photos). The outcome was Curtis in 1st place, the Maroon Breasted Warbler in 2nd place and Mild Colonial Boy in 3rd place.

Thombei appeals through the Mist: So back to Misty and the saga that followed in the week after the event. To calculate nnomads Golf Club handicaps all scores need to be converted to Stableford scores which requires keying the score for every hole for each player. This process by default checks the adding up of score cards as part of the process. Low and behold it was revealed that Thombei the Mist’s score was not added up correctly and was overestimated by 10 strokes (Great checking by someone who will remain nameless). Misty’s real score meant he would have won the BIT by 6 strokes and would have also won the TSCC by 2 strokes.

The question at this point was should the results be changed after the event? This dilemma was further complicated by a submission from Thombei the Mist which forced the Club committee to appoint an independent panel to adjudicate on the matter. And the outcome was a decision to change results to what they should have been at the time of the presentations. The Chairperson of the panel said the following “It was an easy decision in the end. We asked ourselves some simple questions. 1) Did Thombei the Mist actually win the BIT by 6 strokes? The answer is yes! 2) Did Thombei the Mist actually win the TSCC by 2 strokes? The answer is yes! Should Thombei the Mist be penalised purely because someone (unnamed for privacy reasons) could not add up properly? The answer is no! So true justice would be to recognise the real winner for what they achieved on the day. Hence, we recommend that Thombei the Mist is rightfully declared the winner of both events and the reported results be adjusted to reflect this.”

How it really was: So, the real outcome for 2022 was that Thombei the Mist had a clean sweep winning both the BIT and TSCC. Curtis came 2nd in the BIT and 3rd in the TSCC while the Maroon Breasted Warbler came 2nd in the TSCC and 3rd in the BIT. Mild Colonial Boy missed out on 3rd place in both events, but his best off the stick performance still stood. In addition, all players who were presented with one or more balls during the presentations were allowed to keep those balls whether they deserved them or not. And of course, Thombei the Mist was presented with both trophies and associated prize balls at the earliest opportunity. “I would like to thank the organisers and the reparations committee which has gone to great lengths to make sure fake news and a Trump like version of the world is not promulgated in our society …” started out Misty as he was presented with the trophies. (See BIT and TSCC presentations and winners’ speeches 2022).

The Club committee congratulates Thombei the Mist on both his wins and indeed all winners on the day. The Committee was very impressed with the quality of the event organisation and declares this practice event to be an excellent rationale for the return of the BIT and TSCC in future years.

The committee also reminds members to book early for the next major nnomads Golf Club major event – The ‘Melbourne Cup Cupin November. See you there.
