Event Report:

‘Stavros runs AMOK again …’

January 27th 2014: This year the eleven confirmed players all turned up on the day and all played in the annual running of the Australia Masters Open Kup at the Growling Frog which was in contrast to last year, but that’s another story (see last year’s AMOK event report if you don’t remember the details). And this year the weather was beautiful, the course in perfect condition and the local course Professional was nowhere to be seen, setting up a smooth and uninterrupted commencement to this always fiercely competitive event. Actually, that is not strictly true because Don Johnson got the tee off time wrong arriving a couple of hours late, just in time to play the last nine holes. “I turned up and I played albeit a little late. What more do you want?” asked The Don after the event. And of course he was right, but strictly speaking this meant there were only 10 eligible competitors on the day.

Crème de la crème in attendance: As would be expected, the first nnomads Golf Club major event for 2014 attracted a high class field illustrated by Nurse Min, Slugger and Freddie Five Iron in the first group, Curtis, The Cardinal and Rubber Man in the second group and Stavros the Greek, The Bloke, Thombei the Mist and The Hanging Judge in the final group. And to reinforce the point, Don Johnson joined the field at the half way mark showing that the crème de la crème was in attendance. “Does that mean we are not part of the crème de la crème?” asked Markus Octavious, Cinders, The Maroon Breasted Warbler, Billy, Pitte Man, The Dream, The Mild Colonial Boy and the list goes on - by text after reading this article? And of course the answer was ‘no’ because everyone knows the nnomads GC only attracts the crème de la crème! (see AMOK player groups 2014).

Pure quality on course: Meanwhile, those who were there illustrated the quality underlying the nnomads Gold Club membership base through a consistent display of high quality golf. Or at least there were glimpses of brilliance all over the course. For example, Pups longest drive on the 8th and The Hanging Judge’s longest drive on 15th – just poetry in motion. For example, the nearest the pin performances by Thombei the Mist, Rubber Man, The Cardinal and The Bloke – pure illustrations of perfection. And that’s not to mention the general play on course (see on course at the AMOK 2014).

Stavros runs AMOK again: But there can only be one winner on the day and this year it was Stavros the Greek (103,29,74) who took out the event by one stroke from The Cardinal (101,26,75) with Pup a couple of strokes further back (99,21,78). And it was Pup that took out ‘best off the stick’ being the only competitor with a sub 100 score before handicap, which illustrated how hard the course was playing on that particular day. “Maybe it was illustrating something else, like …” added The Don after the game but he was drowned out by the adoring gallery who were only interested in the winners at the time.

Shady presentations: Did I mention the 33 degree temperatures on that day? Which of course meant the presentations held under the shade in Yan Yean reservoir reserve a few minutes down the road, were a welcome relief. “I am privileged to win this event for the second time particularly when the quality of the field is considered. So thanks for the challenge and I look forward to defending my title next year” babbled on Stavros after being handed the AMOK trophy (see 2014 AMOK Champion’s speech). And as is the custom, all prize winners on the day were acknowledged for their performances (see AMOK 2014 presentations). This of course means that Stavros the Greek leads the club championship at this point in time albeit very early in the competition year.

Decision to change club rules: It must be said that the presentations were somewhat overshadowed by a lobby group led by Curtis who observed that a quorum of members were present. Taking this rare opportunity and using a rather convoluted voting process, a quorum of members eventually voted seven members to five, to change the single stroke penalty rule used in nnomads GC major events. This means that from that day forward members need to play a provisional ball from the original spot whenever they think they might have lost a ball. If they take the distance (play from where the ball was lost), a penalty of 2 strokes will apply (see Around The Traps for a full and detailed explanation).

The Club committee congratulates Stavros on taking out the first major of 2014 and indeed all winners on the day. The committee also reminds members that the next nnomads Golf Club major event, is the ‘Blessed are the Big Nose’ Cup to be played on Good Friday. So book early for this not-to-be-missed event and see you there.
