Event Report:

‘Slugger Slays The Frog’

January 28th 2013: Well what a shemozzle if I do say so myself, or at least the period before tee off was. There were eleven players confirmed the day before the annual running of the Australia Masters Open Kup and three groups were booked at the magnificent Growling Frog course. But in the end, only eight players proved to be contenders for the AMOK 2013 championship which didn’t become clear until the second hole. Confused? We sure were. So what happened to those three missing players you ask logically?

Cardinal Goes Missing: Well it all started with a relatively credible excuse from Rubber Man (legitimate illness), followed by a more wimpy but somewhat credible excuse from Timmo (had to protect house and property from bush fire -see ‘Excuse for not turning up’ photos). These guys gave advance notice and were not expected to turn up. But the Cardinal was there, in-person, in the pro shop, had paid his cart and green fees. We all saw him. We all talked to him. We all clearly understood his view on the Growling Frog being the wrong place to play on a public holiday and that we should have been playing at a course like Waterford Valley! He was there …… and then he just disappeared …… he really did!

Quality Field Runs AMOK: Back at the first tee, the rest of the field was waiting to tee off. When the course Professional turned up, the waiting competitors asked whether he had seen our missing player (The Cardinal), last reported to be waiting for his golf cart to come in from a group still on the course (Note: The cart was somewhat late, a fact The Cardinal had noted!) “Your friend became very agitated and upset when I told him he couldn’t drive the golf cart out to the car park for insurance reasons. I’m not sure what he is doing, but last time I saw him he was heading for the car park” replied the golf Professional with a sly grin. “Can’t be The Cardinal. No he wouldn’t react that way, Got the wrong bloke” responded almost everybody in unison (but there were more than a few wondering where the Cardinal was?).

In the end, a quality group of three players led the competition away including Don Johnson, Slugger and Markus Octavious. Then a group of two players teed off, consisting of last year’s club champion The Bloke and this year’s club champion Stavros. And then a final group of three teed off, being Pup, Cinders and Nurse Min. The tour strategy was that if the Cardinal turned up he could still join the last or middle group. If he didn’t turn up, then the two players in the middle group would split up and join the first and last groups to make two groups of eight, which was what happened on the third hole as it became apparent that the Cardinal had actually disappeared and was not going to play! “Look I am sorry. I thought the Pro would have told you I had gone. He definitely knew I had gone. I was damaged goods anyway as you know.” explained The Cardinal to an investigative committee the next day (see AMOK player groups 2013).

Note: The Cardinal actually did have a golf impairing physical injury that became very apparent after arrival at the course (contact The Cardinal direct for more details).

Beautiful plumage: Finally, the two groups of competitors settled into some decent competition with some great golf on display. Pup and Slugger seemed to have an advantage at the turn while the Bloke wasn’t having a good day. Don Johnson got his driver working well, Nurse Min started to rise to the occasion, while Stavros, Cinders and Octavious were all in the hunt for most of the game. Oh! Did I mention that the course was in fantastic condition as usual (see on course at the AMOK 2013)?

Slugger Slays The Frog: As they say in the classics, cream rises to the top! And that’s what happened because Slugger (91,24,67) really went on with it and slaughtered the Growling Frog course. He finished up 5 strokes under the card and 3 strokes in front of the next competitor Pup (90,20,70). The rest of the field ended up competing with Bradman (80+ type cricket scores), so it was a very convincing display from Slugger (and indeed the Pup). Slugger also took out a Longest Drive and Pup also took out an NTP. That left Don Johnson as the only other prize winner on the day with a fabulous Longest Drive on the 15th hole.

Focused Presentations: That meant the presentations were strongly focused on Slugger and quite rightly so. “I’d like to thank the Committee and Agnes who is still overseas ….” and on and on and on Slugger went with a winner’s speech that was truly inspirational. Fortunately or otherwise, the wind made it impossible to understand a word he was saying. Mind you, this didn’t worry other players or the gallery because they were just swept away by the 2013 AMOK Champion saying anything at all (see 2013 AMOK Champion’s speech). That’s not to say other prize winners like Pup (outright 2nd), Stavros (outright 3rd) and Don Johnson (Longest Drive) weren’t acknowledged (see AMOK 2013 presentations).

The Club committee congratulates Slugger on taking out the first major of 2012 and indeed all winners on the day. The committee also reminds members that every game of golf adds a day to your life, so extend your life by booking for the next nnomads Golf Club major event, the ‘Blessed are the Big Nose’ Cup to be played on Good Friday. See you there.
