Pup presenting the MCC 2003 trophy to Rubber Man

On the first Tuesday in November, as they have done for the last 8 years, the 'The Brothers” Rubber Man and Pup invited a select group of privileged players to contest the Melbourne Cup Cup at Yarra Bend Golf Course. Eleven of a planned 12 players (where were you GMAC?) assembled on the 1st tee at 7am where the 'The Brothers” provided the final briefing before tee off. "No Milligan’s” said Rubber Man “And it’s a Callaway event as usual.” Said Pup as the first group were directed on their way.

Beautiful Conditions: It was a beautiful crisp and sunny morning, with dew slowing down the first few tees and the Flying Fox’s in full voice on the 2nd tee. Curtis began very strongly with pars on the first 5 holes coming in with 37 on the first nine. There was strong competition close behind with Pup on 43, The Cardinal and The Bloke on 46 and Billy Bob Thornton on 48. However, no player was able to break 50 on the second nine (yaaa Sustagen), and only four players gained sub 100 gross scores – Curtis (87), Pup (93), The Cardinal (97) and Rubber Man (99).

Controversy over Results: But of course, this was a Callaway event and the winner was determined according to the Callaway scoring system. This year the results were calculated manually as GMAC (who normally provides a computer calculation service) was indisposed and didn’t arrive. Pup created a makeshift Callaway table; the handicaps were calculated and the net scores were confirmed as the players looked on. You could feel the tension and excitement in the air as the totally unexpected winner was announced, Not!

A Little Bit Of History: Readers, you have to understand that in the entire history of this event, one of the “The Brothers” Rubber Man or Pup, always wins this event. The single exception was the year that GMAC won it. Now there are a number of versions of that story. Version 1) It was when GMAC’s new computer Callaway scoring program was used for the first time. On that occasion GMAC won the event. There was some debate about how well the program handled the task at the time but it has since been proven to up to the task. Version 2) GMAC actually won under a manually calculated scoring system before the computer was introduced. “Under the shelter in the car park near the eighteenth. “The Brothers” did the calculation. They used a book. Shane was there. It was before the computer scoring system was introduced.” said GMAC when interviewed on the matter. [Editor’s Note: The Callaway computer program was written on the 21st Oct 2000, GMAC won the 1999 Event].

Now it should also be said that the scores have since been checked by GMC’s validated Callaway scoring program and proved close enough to not change the order of placing’s at all and confirming that the manual scoring approach was accurate enough on the day.

Rubber Man Sneaks in By A Stroke: So low and behold, Rubber Man comes up with a handicap of 25 (what a gift) and a net score of 74 to pip Curtis at the post with a handicap of 12 and a net score of 75.

A Group of Five within Two Strokes: One stroke away on 76 were Pup (17/93), Freddie Five Iron (25/101) and Billy Bob (27/103) with The Cardinal (20/97) and Nurse Min (36/113) a further stroke behind on 77.

You Need A Balance to Win: “You have to get a balanced portfolio of birdies, pars and ‘off to the pubs’ and on the right holes to max out the handicap. But I’m surprised, genuinely surprised!” Rubber Man said as Pup presented him with this year’s magnificent and much envied trophy. “Really, really I am genuinely surprised although I am not sure where it will fit on the mantelpiece.”

Cam gets the NTP & The Rest Had a Great Day: Cam was absolutely delighted to win a ball on his first outing at the Melbourne Cup Cup. “I got a birdie and a ball. You can’t complain about that can you.” he said as he pocketed the prize. Cam doesn’t know it but he picked up another ball courtesy of The Cardinal (See Fang Gets The League Points On Handicap). Overall, it was another great event that once again perfectly set up the rest of the day. All agreed that “The Brothers” had done it again. A very smoothly run event with a quality field and a great outcome albeit a somewhat predictable one.
