November 5th 2024: Once again, the longest running
event on the nnomads event calendar, being the
Melbourne Cup Cup, was played at Yarra Bend on the
first Tuesday in November, Melbourne Cup Day 2025. The weather was fantastic,
and the course was in surprisingly good condition, setting up a perfect
scenario for competition golf. |
|
There were eleven contenders vying for the most sought after
MCC trophy in 2024 making the bookies job just that little bit harder. They
included: Group 1: ·
Pup - Event co-founder/host, multiple past MCC event winner,
always a contender ·
TJ – Always a contender, very much in form ·
Surfer Boy – Bast dressed on course and always a chance ·
Cinders - Previous MCC winner, never misses this event, definitely a dark horsey Group 2: ·
Circuit Board – Anything might happen, definitely on
the improve ·
Markus Octavious – Another dark horse, often with a bandit handicap ·
Slugger Fairweather – Blooms in the good weather, definitely a
chance in the sunshine Group 3: ·
Curtis – Just back from injury, could return to form, definitely a contender ·
Stavros the Greek - Variable performer, bit of a lucky dip, mid field odds ·
The Bloke – Top of the leaderboard, short odds favourite, will definitely place ·
Nurse Min – Good recent form, relaxed on holiday, past winner, definite
chance. With a quality
field like this, it was clearly going to be a tough competition (see 2024
player groups) |
|
Great
form on course: The quality of this field was
again on show from start to finish. Stand out performances included The
Bloke’s brilliant NTP on the 1st, TJs standout NTP on
the 5th, Slugger’s sensational two NTPs on the 7th
and 13th holes, Curtis’s excellent NTP on the 17th,
Stavros the Greek’s unbelievable longest drive on the 6th,
and Nurse Min’s equally unbelievable longest drive on the 14th.
It is fair to say the gallery got their money’s worth throughout the day (see
on course MCC 2024). |

TJ Wins the Cup: The Melbourne Cup Cup has a long
history of close results and 2024 was no different, mainly because of the
Callaway handicapping system used for the event, which by design generates
close results. This year TJ
(97,23,74) just edged out three equal 2nd place getters being Curtis
(97,21,76), The Bloke (91,15,76), and Markus Octavious (115,
39,76) by two strokes, with the next five players within two strokes. Confusing presentations: As usual the MCC presentations were held in
McNamara’s Hut and as usual the hosts laid on a fabulous spread of
nibbles and refreshments thanks to Pup and Rubber Man (in absentia
but in our thoughts). Of course, all this was to celebrate TJ’s sensational
win and all the other memorable performances on the day. However, there
was some initial confusion when Markus Octavious was announced as the
winner, presented with the trophy, and gave an excellent winners speech,
before event organisers suddenly reversed their decision, apologised for the
mistake, and then announced TJ as the winner, and Markus Octavious as equal 2nd
place. “What do you
say eh, sorry to do it to you Markus …”
started out TJ after he was handed the trophy for 2024 in front of an
adoring gallery (see MCC 2024 winners’ speech). |
|
The club committee congratulates TJ on his close win
and all winners on the day. The committee reminds members that the last major
event for 2024 will be the Santa Decanter to be run on the 29th of
December, so book early to avoid disappointment. |
