November 7th 2023: So, the longest running event on the nnomads
event calendar, being the Melbourne Cup Cup, was
again played at Yarra Bend on the first Tuesday in November, Melbourne Cup
Day 2023. The weather was glorious and the course in great condition setting
up a perfect scenario for competition golf. |

There were eight contenders vying for the most sought after
MCC trophy in 2023 making the bookies job just that little bit harder. They
included: Group 1: ·
Pup - Event co-founder/host, multiple past MCC event winner,
always a contender ·
TJ - Top of championship 2023 leader board, short odds
favourite, rarely disappoints ·
Surfer Boy - Well-dressed regular 9-hole golfer, 18 holes might test but
definite contender ·
Cinders - Previous MCC winner, never missed a MCC, always a dark
horse possibility Group 2: ·
Curtis - Past MCC winner, good recent form, Callaway handicap could
be an advantage ·
Stavros the Greek - Variable performer, bit of a lucky dip, mid field odds ·
Billy Bob Thornton - Best looking swing in the business, can always surprise ·
Circuit Board - Rookie on tour, had a lesson previous Saturday, outsider
but good odds. With a quality
field like this, it was clearly going to be a tough competition (see 2023
player groups) |

Did not
disappoint on course: Well, the gallery was
truly entertained from the first tee off to the sinking of the last ball on
the 18th. Stand out performances included Stavros’s 40
strokes off the stick on the 1st 9 holes (shame about the 2nd
9), Circuit Board’s three unbelievable Nearest the Pins on 1st,
13th and 17th holes, TJ’s sensational NTP on the
7th, Surfer Boy’s brilliant longest drive on the 6th
hole and Billy Bob Thornton’s breathtaking longest drive on the 15th
hole. It is fair to say the gallery got their money’s worth
throughout the day (see on course MCC 2023). |

Sensational play-off: The Melbourne Cup Cup has a long
history of close results and play-offs to determine a winner and 2023 was no
different, mainly because of the Callaway handicapping system which generates
close results across the field, a great equalizing handicapping system. This year Billy
Bob Thornton (104,29,75) and Stavros the Greek (92,17,75) just
edged out 3rd placegetter TJ (100,24,76). This of course
meant Billy Bob and Stavros had to undertake a single shot
closest to the pin shootout to determine the 2023 winner. The traditional
rock, paper, scissors system was used to determine who went first before Stavros
prevailed to win the day. “That was pathetic” observed Curtis
after the play-off, but it did not matter because there was a clear winner
(see MCC 2023 Play-Off video). Relaxing presentations: As usual the MCC presentations were held in
McNamara’s Hut and as usual the hosts laid on a fabulous spread of
nibbles and refreshments (thanks Pup and Rubber Man). Of
course, this was to celebrate Stavros the Greeks close win over Billy
Bob and of course all the other memorable performances on the day, and
there were many. “The Melbourne Cup Cup has been
going for 29 years …” started out Stavros as the media listened
eagerly to the newly crowned 2023 champion (see MCC 2023 presentations and
winners’ speech). |
|
The club committee congratulates Stavros the Greek on his
close win and all winners on the day. The committee reminds members that the
last major event for 2023 will be the Santa Decanter to be run on the 30th
of December, so book early to avoid disappointment. |
