‘Curtis Takes Yet Another Cup Cup’ |
|||||||
November 1st 2022: After three long years of absence the Melbourne Cup Cup finally returned to Yarra Bend on the first Tuesday
in November! First contested in 1995, ‘The Cup’ has long been the trophy that
all nnomads want above any other (probably because
it is the only event on tour where the winner actually gets
a trophy!) |
|||||||
The fairways of the great Yarra Bend golf course - the
traditional home of ‘The Cup’ – were once again graced by the finest players
the nnomads Tour has to offer*. * ...’on the day’ (it should be mentioned that several
multiple winners, and just past winners, and some other very realistic
contenders, and even the odd rank outsider...were unfortunately unavailable
to play... they should be mentioned - · The
Bull / Rubber-man - (event co-founder/host, multiple event winner) ·
Stavros the Greek - (first time absentee,
journeyman... always a big chance with Calloway!) ·
Thombei the
Mist or Misty - (a champion - steady, dark horse) ·
Slugger - (watch out if they are going
straight!) ·
The Hanging Judge - (...you jagged it one
year, didn’t you?) ·
The Cardinal - (see above) · Clean
Phil - Lucky - (rookie). |

So, with great
expectations the field gathered in the car park on an unexpectedly fine
morning. The groupings were finally established on the first tee as follows:
Ups and
down on course: After the wettest October in yonks
the foreboding threat of foul weather was nowhere to been seen... with sunny
skies shining over the soggy fairways (the course was not in its’ best
shape... lots of muddy areas... the greens were very good however. (nb...at last the old back 9 is
now the new back 9... to the approval of all!). The weather held up until about half way through the back
9...light rain pattered down but fortunately the wind held off. Apparently,
it was the coldest Cup Day since 1913...but the joy of playing this great course
was clear on the smiling faces of the competitors. The reigning champion, Rubber
Man, came down to cheer on the field over the final holes...much to the
delight of all! |

The club committee thanks all combatants and congratulations
to Curtis on his stella victory after a long absence from the event!
(Note: Curtis and The Bloke both shot 41 on the back nine...sweet!...which included a final hole birdie for the big
fella to secure the “Best Player” medal... but we won’t mention that). The
committee is looking forward to next year’s event with much gusto! |
