‘Debatable result at the club’

Well it was a fascinating day when Rubber Man, Pup, Curtis and Stavros the Greek turned up at the RACV Country Club for a not-so-weekly competition. A full range of weather was on display (from rain to windy to sunny and perfect), and the course was in fantastic condition.

And some excellent golf was on display with Curtis shooting 81 off the stick, Stavros the Greek shooting 91 off the stick, and Rubber Man just a couple of strokes behind Stavros with 94. All we had to do was apply the handicaps to see who won eh!

But it wasn’t that simple because this week’s group played off the white tees which don’t exist in the Golf Australia ratings (no slope rating or scratch score). And the white tees were a long way forward from the Blue tees (Men’s tees) on which the nomads GC daily handicaps are based. And when we asked the pro-shop for the slope rating for the white tees, they explained the white tees are for the ladies rather than men. This meant the nnomads GC daily handicaps were overly generous on the day making the results debatable. Further, if the slope rating for the blue tees was used then Stavros the Greek (net 66 strokes) won by a stroke from Curtis (net 67 strokes). However, if the slope rating for the red tees was used then Stavros and Curtis were equal winners on net 68 strokes.

In the end it was too hard so not winner was announced, no major points on the Bladder were awarded (see year to date Bladder results), and the GA handicap were calculated using the states for the red ladies tees (see latest handicaps).

Subsequently, the committee didn’t congratulate anyone on a win due to the questionable and debatable outcomes. The committee reminds members of Bob Hope who famously said If you watch a game, it’s fun. If you play it, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.”

Previous ‘Not So Weekly’ results – 2017

Date: 16/2/2018

Course: Gardiner’s Run, Lilydale, Victoria

Thombei the Mist
 - Winner on nnomads handicap

‘Misty’s slashes Gardiners’

Again, it was a gorgeous Friday afternoon when Thombei The Mist, The Bloke, Stavros the Greek and Pup turned up at Gardiner’s Run for the second not-so-weekly competition for 2018. Well to be strictly correct, Pup turned up unannounced on the 4th hole, which while was a welcome sight, put him at a disadvantage in terms of the competition.

Not that it really mattered because Thombei The Mist was in dominating form shooting 21 stableford points on the first 9, then 17 points on the second nine and also took out the NTP on the 16th hole. While The Bloke shot a credible 35 points, no one really got a look in from start to finish.

This meant Thombei took the major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), which resulted in his GA handicap coming in by over a stroke (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Misty on an impressive win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Mickie Mantle who famously said “The only sure rule in golf is he who has the fastest cart never has to play the bad lie.”

Stavros The Greek
 - Winner on nnomads handicap

‘Greek bats his way to the front’

So, it was the first not-so-weekly competition for 2018 as Curtis, Pup and Stavros the Greek took on Yarrambat Park on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. And being only a week after the club’s first major event of the year – The AMOK, you would expect all to be in good form (except Curtis who did turn up for the AMOK and was thus coming in cold).

And somewhat surprisingly, Stavros was in blistering form shooting 20 stableford points on the first nine and then fifteen points on the 2nd nine putting him six points in front of Pup at the 19th with Curtis a further point behind. This meant Stavros took out the major points on the Bladder with Pup getting minor points with a sensational NTP on the 16th (see year to date Bladder results). There was little change in the handicaps (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Stavros on a great first up performance and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Alice Cooper who famously said "Mistakes are part of the game. It’s how well you recover from them, that’s the mark of a great player.”
