Standardised Event Report: ‘Cardinal Breaks Drought After Rain’
November 6^th 2018: As with last year, it was raining lightly as the coffee and croissants started to flow in the Yarra Bend carpark, the traditional starting point for the annual running of the Melbourne Cup Cup. At that stage of the day, the course looked in superb condition, but the weather was predicted to deteriorate.
Within this context, the 12 players invited to contest this prestigious event were champing at the bit. In fact, it was the cream of the nnomads Golf Club membership base, who teed-off into the unknown that fateful morning as what could only be described as a [insert preferred adjective] field. Preferred adjective alternatives – 1) Impressive, 2) Top class, 3) Sensational, 4) Magnificent or 5) Awe-inspiring: First onto the tee in Group 1 were event co-sponsor Pup, Cinders, Nurse Min and The Bloke, closely followed by Stavros the Greek, Freddie Five Iron, Thombei the Mist and Billy Bob Thornton in Group 2, with Co-event sponsor Rubber Man, Markus Octavious, The Cardinal and TJ in the final group. With such a highly skilled and competitive field like this, it was clearly going to be a [insert preferred adjective] competition (see 2018 Player Groups). Wipe out on course: But that is not how it turned out. In fact, after a reasonable start the heavens opened up in a torrential downpour that lasted well over an hour. But as you can imagine, this hardy, persistent, all weather field, never distracted, always onwards no matter what field, gave up somewhere after the 6^th hole. This meant the MCC 2018 was rain delayed (see On Course in 2018 – Part 1 including some stunning wet weather golf video footage). December 1^st 2018: So, it was a few weeks later that players congregated once again to finalise the running of the Melbourne Cup Cup for 2018. Unfortunately, a number of original competitors were scared off after the first round leaving co-event sponsor Pup, Thombei the Mist and Stavros the Greek in the 1^st group, Markus Octavious, The Cardinal, and TJ in the 2^nd group, and Freddie Five Iron, Billy Bob Thornton and co-event sponsor Rubber Man in the final group. Again, with such a highly competitive field like this, it was clearly going to be a [insert preferred adjective] competition (see 2018 Player Groups). Solid play on course: Fortunately, that is exactly how it turned out with a truly a [Rotate alternative adjective] a display of how to play competition golf. Perfect examples of such expertise included TJ’s [Rotate alternative adjective] longest drive on the 6^th, Pup’s [Rotate alternative adjective] longest drive on the 15^th, The Cardinals [Rotate alternative adjective] NTPs on the 4^th and 16^th holes, Markus Octavious’s [Rotate alternative adjective] NTP on the 4^th hole, and TJs [Rotate alternative adjective] NTP on the 8^th.^.It is fair to say that the adoring gallery got their money’s worth that day (see On Course Part 2 2018). Cardinal Breaks Drought after Rain: But there was one player who stood out from the rest and that was The Cardinal (100,27,73), who ended up in front on a Callaway handicap by three strokes from Pup and Thombei the Mist in equal 2^nd place, with the rest of the field pretty close behind. Of note was the fact The Cardinal hadn’t won the event since 2010, breaking an eight-year drought in a very impressive way. Appropriate presentations: This meant the presentations back in the carpark were a [Rotate alternative adjective] celebration of The Cardinal’s [Rotate alternative adjective] performance and quite rightly so (see Photos of 2018 presentations). ‘You have got to play the stats …” started out The Cardinal in his winner’s speech, as he battled to be heard over the adoring crowd (see 2018 Champion Winner Speech). The Club committee congratulates The Cardinal on his [Rotate alternative adjective] return to the MCC winners’ podium and indeed all other winners on the day. The committee also observes that de brother’s hospitability was once again simply standout.
