‘Curtis Gardiners on Sunday’

Well it was pretty straight forward on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon when Stavros the Greek and Curtis turned up at Gardiner’s Run for the first not-so-weekly competition for November 2017. “Just because the Melbourne Cup Cup is being run on Tuesday is not a reason to not to play today” stated a bemused Curtis who didn’t really mind there were only two players to contest the competition. And that was because he played out of his skin shooting 82 of the stick and earning 40 Stableford points for his efforts. Poor old Stavros ended up three points behind him on 37 stableford points which just wasn’t good enough on the day. There was no NTP which meant Curtis took the major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps remained pretty much the same (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Curtis on an impressive win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Gary Player who famously said "Golf is a puzzle without an answer. I’ve played the game for 50 years and I still haven’t the slightest idea of how to play."

Nurse Min
 - Winner on nnomads handicap

‘Nurse show he means business’

It was a delightful day at Yarra Bend with Nurse Min, Pup, Rubber Man and Stavros the Greek all turning up to pay the new green fee of $45. “Well I was shocked explained Rubber Man because this is not a $45 course”. So once the shock wore off, it was clear Nurse Min really meant business, shooting 21 stableford points for the first 9 holes and taking out the NTP. But as often the case, things changed on the 2nd nine where Pup came back shooting 20 stableford points on the 2nd nine to end up just two points behind Nurse Min who took out the game with 34 stableford points overall. This meant Nurse Min took out the major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps remained pretty much the same (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Nurse Min on a very impressive performance and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of P.G. Wodehouse who famously said "Golf… is the infallible test. The man who can go into a patch of rough alone, with the knowledge that only God is watching him, and play his ball where it lies, is the man who will serve you faithfully and well.”

Stavros the Greek
 - Winner on nnomads handicap

‘Stavros stands out’

Once again it was a Yarramabt kind of day in terms of weather. But the on-course conditions were not really up to scratch. The greens had been cored and had not been mowed making them extremely lumpy, slow and unpredictable. And the signiture 16th hole was being modified with a wimpy and disappointing temporary green in play. But being nnomads GC members, Curtis, Stavros the Greek and Rubber Man didn’t let the conditions get in the way. In fact Curtis was very impressive in his first game back after surgery and Rubber Man was also very impressive after returning from a week in a resort in far norh Queensland. But it was Stavros the Greek who took out the game with 31 points leaving Curtis and Rubber Man in equal 2nd on 28 stableford points. There was no NTP which meant Stavros took major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps remained pretty much the same (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Stavros on a tremendous win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Jack Benny who famously said "Give me golf clubs, fresh air and a beautiful partner, and you can keep the clubs and the fresh air."

‘Pup Bats it out of the Park’

Well there was a new player in the not-so-weekly competition held at Yarrambat Park last Sunday. Regulars included Stavros The Greek, Rubber Man, and Pup with ‘Young Tommy’ making his first appearance at a nnomads GC event. Once again the weather proved better than expected making it another Yarrambat kind of day.

Withing the context of some pretty average golf, it was Pup (98,20,78), who came home with the bacon sliding in front of Stavros the Greeek (112,32,80) by two strokes. There was no NTP which meant Pup took major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps remained pretty much the same (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Pup on a tremendous win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Alice Cooper who famously said "Mistakes are part of the game. It’s how well you recover from them, that’s the mark of a great player."

Stavros the Greek –2nd Place

‘Curtis Beats the Operation’

So this week Curtis didn’t call in sick but used the need for an operation the following week as a rationale for playing golf beforehand. This meant a fast not-so-weekly competition was organised at Yarrambat park at which Stavros The Greek, Rubber Man, Pup and of course Curtis turned up. As usual the weather report sounded threatening, and as usual it turned out to be another Yarrambat kind of day setting up the perfect scenario for some brilliant golf.

And that is kind of how it turned out with Curtis (87,13,74), gazumping the field with Rubber Man (104,24,80) six strokes behind in 2nd place. There was no NTP which meant Curtis took major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps moved around slightly (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Curtis on an impressive win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Lee Trevino who famously said "I’m not saying my golf game went bad, but if I grew tomatoes, they’d come up sliced."

Rubber Man –2nd Place

Cinders - Winner on
nnomads handicap

‘Cinders Burns up Club’

Well it wasn’t going to t be a triggered major, and then it was, and then it wasn’t because Curtis called in sick, and then Freddie Five Iron couldn’t straighten his neck, which left six conterders for this not-so-weekly competition at the RACV Country Club. So first onto the tee were Stavros the Greek, Pup and Thombei the Mist in in group1, followed closely by Rubber man, Cinders and Aykroyd in the 2nd group. And after a week of rain, it turned out to be sunny tee-shirt weather and truly a magnificant day. That meant that everyone was a winner!

But some winners were more winners than other winners and Cinders (109,36.73), was the perfect example taking out the competition by two strokes from Thombei-the-Mist (98,23,75), with Akkroyd (102,25,77) a further stroke behind in 3rd Place. ). And as you can imagine, the presentations back at the clubhouse were intense as the Pup’s two longest drives, gave way to Stavros’s and Aykroyd’s NTPs, which gave way to the major presentations (see montage of presentations).

All this meant Cinders took major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps didn’t really (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Cinders on an impressive win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Phil Mickelson who famously said "The object of golf is not just to win. It is to play like a gentleman, and win."

Aykroyd - 3rd place

‘Rubber Man bounces back!”’

It was a gorgeous Friday morning at Yarra Bend when The Bloke, Rubber Man, Thombei the Mist and Stavros the Greek turned up to contest another not-so-weekly competition. And it was the first time the new nnomads handicapping system came into play which in fact had little or no real impact on the day.

That was because Rubber Man (99,22,81) was easily able to contain The Bloke (94,15,79) beating him by a convincing two strokes, with the rest of the field further behind. The only other highlight of the day was Thombei The Mist’s magnificent NTP on the 4th hole where he didn’t appear to have much competition. This meant Rubber Man took the major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps didn’t move around very much (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Rubber Man on an excellent win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Hamilton Lloyd who famously said "My most consistent and reliable shot is always the double at the 19th."

‘Champ shows why he is’

Surprise, surprise because Yarrambat was the venue for the not-so-weekly competition, and as yet again it was a Yarramabt kind of day. And it really was – The fog lifted just as The Bloke, Curtis, Pup and Stavros the Greek teed off with Rubber Man officiating for the day. And the sun came out to create perfect, breathless conditions for golf.

As it was Curtis and Pup were the real performers on the day with The Bloke taking out the Longest Drive on the 15th. But it came down to a single stroke with club champion Pup (93,18,75) edging out Curtis (89,13,76) on the last hole. This meant Pup took the major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps did move around a little (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Pup on an somewhat expected win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Sam Snead who famously said "If I had cleared the trees and drove the green, it would’ve been a great shot."

‘Bloke Belts Bat’’

So just to be different, Yarrambat was the venue for the not-so-weekly competition, and as you would expect it was another Yarramabt kind of day. This perfectly suited the four contenders including The Bloke, Club Champion ‘Pup’, Nurse Min and Stavros the Greek.

And it was pretty close for most of the game with The Bloke, Pup and Nurse Min all staying in contention. Well for a while at least because The Bloke (889,16,73) kept on performing and came out on top, while Pup (96,19,77) and Nurse Min (108,31,77) slowly slipped away to end up in equal second place. Of note was the fact that the NPT didn’t go off on the 16th meaning that The Bloke took the major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps pretty much stayed where they were (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates The Bloke on an impressive win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Phyllis Diller who famously said "The reason a pro tells you to keep your head down is so you can’t see him laughing."

‘Curtis Kills the Couch’

Yet again Yarrambat was the venue for the not-so-weekly competition, and as yet again it was a Yarramabt kind of day, albeit in a late autum setting. The fog persisted right up to the tee off, and a heavy dew played havoc on the greens for most of the game. Yet the conditions proved excellent for this extremely competitive competition between The Bloke, Curtis, and Stavros the Greek.

Well that might be a slight exaggeration because the real competition was between The Bloke and Curtis who were within a stroke of each other at the end of the first nine holes. Then Curtis (85,13,76), really pulled it out as he tore up the Yarrambat couch grass on the second nine, finishing five strokes in front of The Bloke (93,16,77). His performance included four pars, three birdies and a sensational NTP on the 16th hole. This meant Curtis took the major points on the Bladder (see year to date Bladder results), while the handicaps have yet to be done (see latest handicaps).

The committee congratulates Curtis on an encouraging win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee reminds members of Jimmy Demaret who famously said "Golf and sex are about the only things you can enjoy without being good at them."

Stavros the Greek - Winner on
nnomads handicap

‘Stavros Stars with Bat’

Once again Yarrambat was the venue for the not-so-weekly competition and yes it was a Yarramabt kind of day. And once again the course was in excellent condition on a mild February Friday afternoon. There were four competitors that toughed it out in the ideal conditions including The Bloke, Rubber Man, Curtis and Stavros the Greek. And all were in good form with only four strokes separating the players at the end of the round.

But the standout performer proved to be Stavros the Greek (93,25,68) who edged out The Bloke (86,17,69) by one stroke with Rubber Man (92,22,70), a further stroke behind and Curtis (86,14,72) even with the card. When even with the card is the worst performance on the day, you have to say some good golf was played. This was also exampled by The Bloke’s sensational Longest Drive and Curtis’s magnificent Nearest the Pin.

This meant that while Stavros took the major points on the Bladder, the points were shared around (see year to date Bladder results). It also meant some handicaps came down thought to be justified by the handicapper at the time.

The committee congratulates Stavros the Greek on a convincing win and indeed all winners on the day. The committee also reminds members of John Updike who famously said "Golf appeals to the idiot in us and the child. Just how childlike golf players become is proven by their frequent inability to count past five."

Nure Min and Curtis – Joint winners on
nnomads handicap

‘The Nurse and Curtis show’

It was one week before the AMOK, the 1st major event for the year when Curtis, Stavros the Greek, Nurse Min and newly crowned nnomads golf club champion Pup decided some practice was in order on a beautiful January Friday afternoon at Yarrambat. The course was in surprisingly good condition which meant the conditions were perfect for golf, an incentive for all players to perform well.

But it proved to be all about Nurse Min (105,31,74) and Curtis (88,14,74) who both came in two strokes over the card. And to reinforce this conclusion, Nurse Min took out the NTP and Curtis took out the Longest Drive. This meant Nurse Min and Curtis shared the first points on the 2017 Bladder (see year to date Bladder results) while the handicaps were unaffected.

The committee congratulates Nurse Min and Curtis on an emphatic performance. The committee also reminds members of Bruce Lansky who famously said "We learn so many things from golf—how to suffer, for instance."
