Major Event Report:

‘Bloke PISses into wind for Victoria

October 20th and 21st 2016: It had been fourteen long years since the PIS had been to Port Fairy and yet somehow the locals could still remember the events in 2004. Consequently, the council closed the bridge between where the PIS Tour was staying and the centre of town in an effort to control the damage. But of course, it didn’t matter because PIS Artists are a resourceful bunch, either using the walk bridge or driving around the long way when they needed to get to the pub. “Nothing gets in the way of a PIS tour!” observed The Captain as he took his 1st drink in the front bar of the closest hotel on the Thursday night in front of a very surprised bartender.

Impressive field: JB couldn’t make it unfortunately, leaving a truly impressive field of 15 players to contest the two day PIS 2016 event. On ‘The Tour’ were some of the most infamous past PIS champions (Jacko, The Captain, Normie Rowe, Critey, and Stavros The Greek), and equally infamous past players (tour leader - The Tanunda Kid, Beau Didley, King Billy, Boog, The Maroon Breasted Warbler, The Bloke, Nurse Min, and The Hanging Judge). In fact, there was only one new tour member – Snoady, who obviously didn’t realise what happened on a PIS tour, but coped rather well once he got over the shock of it all

An arduous Day 1: The weather on the first day looked daunting as players arrived at the Port Fairy golf club including a solid wind that was obviously going to be in play. But no-one seemed to care as tour leader the Tanunda Kid started to issue the compulsory shot of brandy or similar for all players prior to tee off. “Here’s to Patricia” was the cry as the media took shots of the player groups and the field moved off towards the first tee (see 2016 PIS Player groups).

Well it did rain off and on for the first 9 holes after which it came good leaving only a very strong wind to contend with. And as was expected, there were some fantastic performances across the 2016 Day 1 field including Nurse Min and The Hanging Judge who ended up equal first place at the end of the first day (See Day 1 - On course at the PIS 2016).

What happens on tour stays on tour:  So that night was very quiet, and as you would expect, most players were in bed early to ensure they were fresh and rested for the final day of competition. “What a lot of bollocks” pointed out The Hanging Judge when he read the previous line. “Yeah, what about The Tanunda Kid and Beau Didley trying the break into the house next door at 1.00am in the morning eh? – He walked all over that guy’s car!” pointed out Critey agreeing with the Judge. “And that impromptu band that sprang up at the other house” added Beau Didley “And those women wearing those little ….” started out Boog who then went very quiet. So as you can imagine, a quiet and restful night was had by all.

A sensational final day: Well the final day’s competition was all that you would expect with the weather being kind and the course in brilliant condition. And once the hangovers wore off, there were some sensational performances exampled by The Captain’s longest drive, The Bloke’s longest drive and Crtitey’s Nearest-the-Pin which were easily as good as The Tanunda Kids longest drive and NTP or Boogs NTP on Day 1.

And at the end of the day, it all came down to a couple of strokes separating the top five players. Of note were the performances by the Victorians, particularly The Bloke (net 169 strokes) and The Hanging Judge (net 170 strokes) who sneaked in just in front of The Tanunda Kid (net 171 strokes), The Captain (net 171 strokes), and The Maroon Breasted Warbler (net 171 strokes) in equal 3rd place. It way a day to remember to say the least, or at least from a Victorian point of view (see Day 2- On course at the PIS 2016).

Long and hilarious presentations: So, it was great to watch the immediate past PIS champion ‘The Captain’, hand on the PIS Green Jacket to a Victorian, of course being the nnomads Golf Club reigning champion – The Bloke who during his speech said he “thought the Green Jacket fitted well and was glad to win” (see 2016 PIS winner’s presentation and speech).

But that description misrepresents the drama and hilarity associated with PIS presentations because there were a number of awards handed out over the night including the Bob Hope Fellowship award (runner up - Jacko and Winner - The Maroon Breasted Warbler), the Nick Kyrious ‘I let the golf get in the way’ award (3rd place – Snoady, 2nd place – King Billy, and winner – Nurse Min), the ‘Between God and Satan’ award (Winner – Nurse Min), the ‘Barry Crocker – With a song in my heart’ award (Winner – The Hanging Judge), and the Welcome aboard the PIS Encouragement’ award (Winner – Snoady). And of course, there were the Nearest-the-pin and Longest drive awards culminating in the GungaGalunga award for Best-off-the-stick (Winner – The Bloke) and the awarding of the PIS Green Jacket for 2016 (Winner – The Bloke, as you know).

So, as you can imagine, it was a quiet and peaceful affair similar to the previous night, during which The Captain was appointed to the PIS ‘Hall of Fame’, Critey was inducted as a PIS Life Member’, and Boog was awarded ‘Almost PIS Life Member’ status.  (See PIS Presentations videos and photos).

2016 PIS Winners’ Speech
Short version video

The committee congratulates The Bloke on his sensational performance and indeed all other winners on the day. The nnomads Golf Club committee also congratulates the PIS organizing committee on a truly superbly organised event. In fact, the nnomads Golf Club committee believes we can learn something from the PIS organising committee based on photos of a PIS committee meeting at Port Elliot a few years ago. “Yeah I saw those photos, and if that’s what a committee meeting is like, I would go to a committee meeting, if I was on the committee” stated a very impressed Hanging Judge.

Note 1: The nnomads Golf Club committee hasn’t met since 1999. However, based on the reported PIS committee meeting approach, the nnomads Golf Club committee plans to introduce meetings of a similar type in the short term, once it can locate the list of current committee members.

Note 2: If you are a current nnomads Golf Club committee member, please call or email Agnes immediately.
