The Cardinal 2nd April 2015 Yering Meadows |
Event Report: ‘Cardinal makes out in the meadows’ April 2nd 2015: Well this year’s
Blessed are the Big Nose’ Cup was held at Yering Meadows, a top class
championship course with a reputation as a long, tough and challenging course
with a lot of water. And that would be true if we had played off the blue or
the yellow tees. But in true nnomads GC form, we decided to play off the white tees which are
designed for players over 85 years old. That’s right; in fact many of the
white tees were in front of the ladies red tees and at best were the same
distance as the ladies red tees. “Look,
we didn’t know that at the beginning of the round….” protested Billy Bob Thornton when the course
marshal fell over laughing at men under 70 years old playing off the white tees, but that is
another story. Another quality field: As would be expected, the event attracted a quality field
including Don Johnson, The Cardinal,
Rubber Man and Billy Bob Thornton in the first group and Freddie Five Iron, Markus Octavious,
Stavros the Greek and Slugger in the second group. “I recon they should have
played off the back tees or at least the yellow tees” whispered a
bystander to his friend as they watched both groups approach the first tee
(see BBNC 2015 player groups). Not so much of a
challenge on course: As I was saying, Yering
Meadows has a reputation as a long, tough and challenging course. However,
when you are playing off the white tees, it is more like a walk in the park because you are
teeing off from half way down the fairway. “That’s not fair. It is still a challenge when you only play every
other month” chipped in Markus Octavious after
reading the previous sentence. Of course he was right because all players
faced the same challenges and all had the same opportunities to do something
spectacular on course. And indeed some players really did step up to the
challenge. For example, Billy Bob
showed some form with a brilliant longest drive and an impressive NTP. Then Rubber Man did the exactly the same, a
glorious Longest Drive and a spectacular NTP. And not to be left out of the
exhibition, Freddie Five Iron
executed a truly sensational NTP that was one of the best shots of the day.
And all this on a beautiful course in tip top condition (see on course at the BBNC 2015). Cardinal make out in the meadows: “Don’t talk to me you
guys. I’m right in the zone” The
Cardinal was heard to say on a number of occasions as he forged his way
down various fairways. And he was right. He was in the zone because The Cardinal tuned in a brilliant
‘Best-off-the-stick’ performance (91,26,65) to come in seven strokes under
the card, and a full twelve strokes in front second place getter Freddie Five Iron (113,36,77), with Billy Bob Thornton (111,30,81) and Rubber Man (102,21,81) in equal third
a further four strokes behind Freddie.
Slugger’s place for the presentations: “Sauce please” was
the call as Slugger turned on
sausages and onions on bread hot off the BBQ back at his place to start off
the presentation proceedings (Thanks Slugger!!). So after the stampede for
the tomato sauce, and the longwinded countdown, naming every player in the
field, and praising all the NTPs, Longest drives and minor placegetters, Slugger again stepped, as last years
champion, to hand the most sought after ‘Blessed
are the Big Nose’ Cup trophy to an extremely pleased Cardinal (see 2015
BBNC presentations). “Well this is
the first handicap trophy I have ever won…” started out The Cardinal as the media pack swarmed
around him after the presentations. “I
thought it was a pretty good speech really, although, he did go on a bit
about his poor opinion of the Callaway handicapping system and then that
dedication to Stephen Dank and the Essendon Football Club at the end was a
pretty low blow so hmmm” mused Pup
in a text after watching the Cardinal’s presentation speech (see 2015 BBNC Winner’s speech). The Club committee congratulates The Cardinal on an impressive ‘personal best’ performance and of
course all winners on the day. The committee also points out that The Cardinal has now the lowest
average score in the 2015 club championship, albeit after only submitting two
of a required four cards, from nnomads Golf Club
major competition events, to become eligible to win the 2015 club
championship (see YTD club
championship results). And of course, it is early in the competition year
with another major event, the ANZAC Day Medal, due to be run in a couple of
weeks’ time. That said, it is already looking like a
very exciting year on the 2015 nnomads GC circuit.
