Mild Colonial Boy 10th October 2014 Flinders Golf Club |
Event Report: ‘Mild Boy Takes Classic’ Friday 10th October 2014: Well it was sad in a way knowing this was to be the last
running of the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic in its present format. Not that
anyone knew this at the time because the most controversial quorum in 2014 and
the subsequent decisions did not occur until the following night. This meant
the eighteen man 2014 Tulum Sands Callaway Classic field was blissfully
unaware as they began to congregate at Flinders Golf Club on a perfect day
with just a hint of wind moving through the top of the trees around the pro
shop. “What a load of cobblers. More
like raging through the trees” suggested The Hanging Judge who subsequently decided not to preside over
the controversial proceedings the following night. “It’s an all-weather game Judge. You sound like a pussy or should that
be woosy” added Boog who thought he had better
get involved early having never attended the event before and not
understanding what the quorum the following night was all about. “Well you can see the South Australian interlopers
are back” chipped in the Maroon
Breasted Warbler pointing out what was now obvious to the rest of field. High quality line up: “Gentlemen, gentlemen,
gentlemen and I use the term loosely. I expect civility from all at such quality
event” emphasised Clean Phil as
he stepped up to take control of the proceedings. But in the end he didn’t
have to because it was a quality field,
so it was almost certainly going to be a quality event. This was exampled by
the first group onto the tee which comprised of The Hanging Judge, The Cardinal, The Tanunda Kid and The Bloke”
and was reinforced by the second group, Critey, Curtis and Nurse Min.
That is not to take anything away from the third group including Freddie Five Iron, Markus Octavious and Slugger,
or the fourth group with Clean Phil,
The Maroon Breasted Warbler and Pup
or indeed the final group containing Stavros
the Greek, Boog, King Billy and Mild Colonial Boy (see 2014 player groups). Pure quality on
course: Despite the Hanging Judge’s views on the wind, it proved to be a magnificent day
with the course in almost perfect condition and the weather clear and sunny.
This set up the perfect scenario for some fantastic golf. And indeed, that is
what came to pass as was exampled by Nurse
Min’s sensational NTP on the 9th, The Cardinals equally impressive NTP on the 12th and The Blokes truly amazing NTP on the 14th.
And that wasn’t all, because Boog produced a brilliant longest drive on the 7th
and The Bloke executed a sublime
longest drive on the 15th. And of course, all this happened with
that most striking view off the cliffs in the background (see – on course in 2014). Mild boy takes classic: As readers will remember, the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic is
a Callaway event meaning that player handicaps are calculated after the game
using the Callaway system. “Derr…. What a waste of space that line was” observed Markus Octavious.
But it didn’t matter because process of calculating the results created an
atmosphere tension and anticipation as players warmed down over a drink or five
back at Palmers Hill in Balnarring. And the air of expectancy was enhanced
further as Stavros the Greek slowly
read out the results of every player from highest to lowest net score one by
one. And because Stavros wasn’t
involved in the calculations, and the results were not written down in order,
it proved to be a somewhat elongated affair. “Sharp as a bowling boy that Stavros. Even with help he still missed The
Tanunda Kid” observed Critey. But that didn’t matter either because finally it became
clear that it was Mild Colonial Boy
(91,17.5,73.5) who took out the event by one stroke from Nurse Min (103,28.5,74.5) with The Bloke, The Cardinal and Maroon
Breasted Warbler in equal third place on net 75 strokes (see 2014 TSCC countdown). Riotous
presentations: As you can imagine, the
presentations proved to be a riot with all prize winners being given their
dues one by one. And eventually last year’s TSCC champion The Bloke handed Mild Colonial Boy the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic cup for 2014. “Since this event won’t be played next
year, does that mean I get to keep the cup?” Mild Colonial Boy might have asked if he had known about the
quorum and decision to be made the following night. But of course he didn’t
(see 2014 TSCC Presentations).
Celebrations into the night: And
that didn’t matter either, as players consumed the pre-dinner canapés and finger
food that was the precursor to a truly sumptuous meal prepared by MBW and The Cardinal accompanied by a choice of fine Yalumba
red wines provide by the Tanunda Kid.
“Lucky we got a mention before the end
of the article. Otherwise it would have been a dry argument next year”
added The Tanunda Kid. So as you
can imagine most players were in bed early so as to be well rested for the
golf competition the following day – NOT! Rather, the celebrations went far
into the night so as to suitably toast the newly crowned Tulum Sands Callaway
Classic champion. The Club committee congratulates Mild Colonial Boy on his end of an era performance and of course all
other winners on the day. The Committee also points out that next year’s newly
anointed Ambrose team’s event will be a not-to-miss occasion. So book early
to avoid disappointment. |
