Cinders 4th November 2014 Yarra Bend |
Event Report: ‘Cinders Burns Bend in MCC’ Tuesday 4th November 2014: Gone are the days when ‘De
Bros’ shared the Melbourne Cup Cup trophies
between themselves year after year. But consistent with every year since the
events’ inception in the early 1990s, the hospitality
was sensational and the 2014 trophy something all competitors aspired to win.
Consistent with every year since the events’ inception The Hanging Judge was a no show, famously saying “There is no such thing as 7.00am on the morning of a public holiday”. And consistent
with every year since the events’ inception Cinders was there for his annual game of golf which was extremely
fortunate but we will get to that bit later in the article. Coffee and croissants before the game: The quality of the hospitality was perfectly exampled by Café de-Steph which as usual was in
full operation with coffee and croissants as players arrived at Yarra Bend
for the 7.15am tee off. “Makes it all extremely civilised doesn’t it” suggested Nurse Min as he piled more homemade
jam onto his second croissant. “Particularly
after a two hour drive to get here” agreed Billy Bob Thornton who was the perfect example of nnomads dedication after leaving his country estate at 4.00am to compete in this most prestigious competition. Excellent turn out: Consistent with every year since the events’ inception, there
was an excellent turnout with three groups of players champing at the bit at
the first tee. “Minus Slugger who was a
no show? He must have had a very big night because he is normally pretty
reliable” emphasised a somewhat surprised joint event sponsor Rubber Man. But Slugger’s absence was soon forgotten as the first group stepped
onto the tee with joint event sponsor Pup
leading the field away, followed by Stavros
the Greek, Cinders and Freddie Five
Iron. Next up was Billy Bob
Thornton, The Bloke and Nurse Min
who all got away brilliantly. Then joint event sponsor Rubber Man followed by
Curtis, Markus Octavious and The Cardinal finalised the field. With
a line up like that it was clearly going to be a competition to remember (see
MCC player groups 2014). Sublime on course: This year the weather was
perfect albeit predicted to deteriorate later in the day for the big race.
And the Yarra Bend course was in excellent condition albeit not as good as
the original layout, now a distant memory from the past. “They decimated this course when they changed the layout didn’t they”
agreed Curtis pleased to have
another opportunity to criticise the course management. But it didn’t matter
because players were focusing on the fabulous MCC trophy, applying every golfing
skill they had learned in an effort to win the event. The result was some truly
memorable on course performances exampled by Freddie Five Iron’s two sensational NTPs on the 4th
and 14th, The Cardinal’s
fabulous longest drive on the 6th and his incredible NTP on the 8th.
“That shot of Freddie’s on the 14th
was one of the best golfing shots I have ever seen and he was using a five iron
of all things” explained joint event sponsor Pup later in the day. “Yes
it was the rounded bottomed five iron for that hole
so as to make the distance” explained Freddie
after the well-deserved compliment. But they were not the only stand out
performances on course that day. For example, Rubber Man and Curtis
both broke 90 strokes coming in equal Best-off-the-Stick
on gross 89 strokes (see 2014 on
course video coverage). “Well it
wasn’t that good because no one in the field got on the fairway for the
second longest drive hole” suggested Curtis
later at the presentations (see oncourse in 2014). Nail bitting play-off: As has been the case on a number of past occasions, the competition
was so close that the Callaway handicapping system produced another tied
first place, which as always, results in a chip-off between the best two
players on the day. And what a nail-bitting event it was as Cinders and The Bloke lined up at the 9th hole to fight it out. “Well it was exciting until The Bloke had
his first shot after which Cinders clearly had the upper hand” observed Markus Octavious.
“Well the excitement went on a little
longer than that but yes in the end Cinders was convincing” confirmed Billy Bob Thornton (see video of the 2014 MCC Playoff). Cinders Burns Bend: And of
course Billy Bob was right because Cinders popped it in for three strokes
leaving The Bloke floundering in his
wake. “Thanks to my sponsor National
Bank” reinforced Cinders to the
jostling media pack as he walked back to the pavilion in readiness for the soon
to resume presentations. And what a celebration it was as last year’s MCC champion Curtis was called on to present the
2014 trophy to a most worthy winner Cinders.
“Well done, well deserved
after all these years …” stated out Curtis
as he passed on the trophy. “I want to again
thank my sponsors and ‘de Bros’ for putting together such a lovely event once
again” declared a humble Cinders
as the gallery erupted in applause (see video
of 2014 MCC presentation). “Bad luck Bloke. It was
a great playoff” announced Pup as he presented The Bloke with a couple of balls for
second place. Then Pup took a ball for
himself and gave another to Curtis
for coming in equal third place on the day. And on it went as each prize
winner was acknowledged one by one to ongoing rapturous applause accompanying
each presentation (see 2014 MCC
presentations). The Club committee congratulates Cinders for burning up Yarra Band after all these years and
indeed all winners on the day. The committee also thanks event sponsors ‘De Bros Inc.’ for putting on yet another
sensational day, again reinforcing that as the longest running competition on
the nnomads Golf Club calendar, the Melbourne Cup Cup remains one of greatest events on earth, or something
to that effect! |
