Slugger 19th April 2014 Ranferlie |
Event Report: ‘Slugger shows how it is done’ April 19th 2014: So
after last year’s game at the uninspiring Amstel Golf Club’s ‘Amstel’ course, this years the ‘Blessed are the Big Nose’ Cup moved around
the corner to Amstel Golf Club’s 6,279 meter scratch rating 73 ‘Ranferlie’ course which was a vast improvement in
anyone’s language. Same quality field: And clearly Ranferlie was an attractive prospect because it was almost
the same group of quality players that signed on for this year’s event
including The Bloke, Slugger, Don
Johnson and Pup in the first group with The Cardinal, Stavros the
Greek and Rubber Man in the
second group, Pup being a welcome
addition to this year’s tour (see BBNC
2014 player groups). A challenge on course: And as most people would know, Ranferlie has a reputation as a
long, tough and challenging course. Hence, the pouring rain and howling wind that
was there to welcome players as they arrived meant that this year’s event was
likely to be a particular challenge. “Cummon youze pansies. You can’t
be put off by a little moisture and a light breeze” encouraged The Cardinal dressed in his wet
weather gear as the field sheltered under the eaves of the club house before
the tee off. But he didn’t need to worry because they all stepped up to the
plate at the appropriate time using the short breaks in the rain to
advantage. In fact there were a couple of players that illustrated their contempt
for the conditions including The Bloke
and Slugger who both turned up in
shorts and refused to use wet weather gear (except for a jacket). This
contrasted with the rest of the field who were very much involved in ongoing
apparel and equipment management as the rain came and went during the round. “Put it on, take it off, and put it on
again. It certainly was a distraction” confirmed Don Johnson at the end of play. But those comments didn’t really characterise
the game because the weather abated towards the end of the first nine giving
players a chance to dry out and creating lovely playing conditions on course.
And it was players like Rubber Man
that took advantage delivering a sensational longest drive on the eight hole
followed up with an NTP on the ninth hole. And indeed The Bloke who delivered a fantastic NTP on the twelfth hole and Pup who executed a truly magnificent longest
drive on the last hole (see on course
at the BBNC 2014). Slugger showed how it is done: Now there was a theory going around that by ignoring the need
for wet weather gear those players were not distracted by the need for apparel
management. “My theory is that if you
just ignore it, it will go away” explained Slugger later at the presentations. And maybe he was right because
it was Slugger in shorts (101,23,78)
that took out this year’s event by five strokes from The Bloke also in shorts (103,20,83), Rubber Man (106,23,83) and The
Cardinal (108,25,83) in equal second place. And of particular note was
the fact that not a single player produced a score bellow 100 strokes with
the best off the stick being Slugger with 101 strokes. “It was a testament to how hard it really was on course”
suggested Slugger trying to make
the rest of the field feel better about their performances. Car park presentations: But it didn’t
matter because the weather remained clear for that all important celebration
of Slugger’s efforts at which last year’s
champion The Don handed over the ‘Blessed are the Big Nose’ trophy to Slugger who gratefully and humbly accepted
it. “I would like to thank Agnes for
her wonderful work behind the scenes …” started off Slugger as the media clambered for position to hear the newly
crowned champion’s acceptance speech (see 2014 BBNC Winner’s speech).
And of course all prize winners on the day were celebrated with appropriate
prizes applause and encouraging cheering (see 2014 BBNC presentations). The Club committee congratulates Slugger for a truly sensational performance and of course all
winners on the day. The committee also points out that The Cardinal has now taken the lead in the 2014 club championship
displacing previous leader Stavros
after a string of impressive major event performances (see YTD club championship results).
Mind you, it is early in the competition year with another major event, the
ANZAC Day Medal, due to be run in seven days’ time. Hence, anything can
happen before the end of 2014…… |
