Event Report: ‘The Bloke Earns a Medal’ 25th April
2015 – Lest we forget: So
this year’s annual running of the ANZAC Day medal at the Growling Frog was an
unforgettable event. This was in part due to the fabulous conditions
including a mild and breathless day and the course being in perfect condition,
and in part because of the eager and very keen group of competitors. In fact,
TimBo was
champing at the bit before tee off trying to encourage players onto the tee
quite some minutes early. “Just because
Slugger hadn’t turned up was not a reason to delay the tee-off. It was an
opportunity lost” lamented TimBo after the round. Age shall not weary them, nor the
years condemn: As
usual, a number of past ANZAC Day medal champions were in attendance, in fact
five of the eight players were past champions and almost all were wearing
their medals. For example, the first group onto the tee included The Bloke (2011 ADM Champion without
his medal), Stavros the Greek (2012
ADM Champion with his medal), Pup (aspiring ADM Champion) and TimBo
(another aspiring ADM Champion). They were complimented by the second group which
included Slugger (2009 and 2010 ADM
champion with both medals), The Hanging
Judge (2006 ADM Champion with medal), Rubber
Man (2012 ADM Champion with medal) and Curtis (event sponsor and aspiring ADM Champion). “I just can’t understand why Thombei the Mist and Markus Octavious are not here. It’s bloody
poor form if you ask me” stated a disappointed Curtis when trying to explain the absence of a couple of past
champions. But he didn’t condemn them as the glorious conditions became
apparent on the first tee (see ADM
Player Groups 2014). They shall not grow
old: And those glorious conditions remained apparent
throughout the competition encouraging a number of players to excel. Perfect
examples included Stavros The Greek’s
NTP on the 2nd, Curtis’s
NTP on the 5th, The Hanging
Judge’s longest drive on the 8th, Slugger’s NTP on the 12th, The Bloke’s longest drive on the 15th and Slugger’s NTP on the 16th. “The years may be going past and we may
all be that little older but the standard remains the same” observed a
proud event sponsor Curtis just
before the presentations. “Speak for
yourself short-stuff. I’m still improving” pointed out The Bloke who took offence at being
told his standard of performance had remained the same over the years (see on course at the 2014 ADM). The Bloke earns a
medal: And of course The Bloke was
right (89,20,69) because he produced a sensational round on the day ending up
four strokes under the card and a stroke in front of second place getter and event
sponsor Curtis (90,20,70) with Rubber Man (97,25,72) a further two
strokes behind. “I knew I was going to
beat you Nancy boys and that’s why I didn’t bother bringing my medal. I just knew
I would have another one by the end of the day” explained The Bloke when Curtis again mentioned the long standing tradition of past ANZAC
day champions wearing their ADM medals to the competition and berated those who
had turned up without them, being The
Bloke. At the going down of
the sun: But there was no ill feeling as the
players warmed down in the car park after the game. And indeed, The Bloke’s outstanding performance was
well and truly celebrated as Curtis
handed him the ADM perpetual trophy and last year’s winner Rubber Man pined the 2014 ADM medal on
The Blokes chest. “It is a privilege to pin this medal on a
true champion. From champion to champion, whoops sorry about that…” he
muttered as he drew blood on his first attempt. But it didn’t matter as the
gallery erupted in laughter because all winners on the day were appropriately
celebrated as the sun went down on another truly fabulous day (see ADM 2014 presentations). The committee congratulates The Bloke on his return to the winners
circle and indeed all winners on the day. The committee also reminds members that
the next major event is the VOMIT scheduled to run on the Queen’s birthday
weekend in June, so book you place early.
