The Bloke 18th October 2013 Flinders Golf Club |
Event Report: ‘Bloke does over Mild in Classic’ Friday 18th October 2013: The weather turned out to be sunny and clear, albeit a little
bit windy, for the annual running of the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic at the
magnificent Flinders Golf club on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. And
the event was all the more special because of the magnificent accommodation
being Palmers Hill overlooking
Balnarring beach, albeit a venue vulnerable to the ongoing jokes about ‘Mrs Palmer and her five daughters’ in
part driven by the name of the house, in part driven by the availability of
single rooms and in part driven by the absence of women, but that’s another
story.
For example, the first group onto the tee
included The Hanging Judge, Nurse Min
and Slugger which certainly set the quality tone. Then the second group
with Clean Phil, Rubber Man, The Maroon
Breasted Warbler and The Cardinal
reinforced the quality standard. This was further illustrated by group three
containing The Bloke, Rodger the
Lodger, Don Johnson and Freddie
Five Iron and was undoubtedly confirmed by the last group with The Mild Colonial Boy, Billy, Bobbie
and Stavros the Greek. Hence, the
scene was set for a fearsome competition (see 2013 player groups). Pure quality on
course: A combination of rain and sun over the
previous month made sure the course was in perfect condition. This
complimented the magnificent views associated with Flinders GC to create the
perfect on course environment. It was difficult to see why any player would
not produce their best golf although it must be said that the wind was
certainly in play on the more exposed sections of the course (see – on course in 2013). Chip-off to determine winner: And of course this was a Callaway
event in which the results depend entirely on the player’s Callaway handicap
which is calculated on the day using the Callaway scoring system. And as
usual, the results at the end of the day were very close with only six
strokes between the best and worst net score. And as is often the case in the
TSCC, there were two players on the lowest net score including The Bloke (89,15,74)
and The Mild Colonial Boy
(94,20,74) which once again created the need for a play-off or more accurately a chip-off
to determine the winner. “But the
Callaway rules say you determine the winner via a count back” observed
new comer and somewhat confused Rodger
The Lodger. “Yeah but there is far
more entertainment value in watching two drunk men trying to chip balls into
a bucket” explained The Cardinal
as he stepped into supervise the chip-off
in the back yard at Palmers Hill with the rest of the tour watching from the
balcony above (see snaps of 2013
Chip-off).
Pictuesque
presentations: Back on the balcony with that
magnificent view over overlooking Balnarring Beach, the presentations and
celebrations continued into the night. The
Bloke was presented with the TSCC mug, much to the disgust of last year’s
winner The Cardinal who had become
quite attached to it. The Mild Colonial
Boy calmed down when presented with second prize and all were amused with
the announcement that four players came in equal third being Don Johnson, Bobbie, Billy and Clean Phil. The Bloke also took out
both longest drives and an NTP illustrating he really was the best player on
the day. The Maroon Breasted Warbler
and Stavros the Greek took out the
remaining NTPs while Clean Phil
took out the Endeavour Award for 2013 (see 2013 TSCC presentations). That
set the scene for a fabulous night of fine food, excellent wine and great
company that was enjoyed by all in preparation for doing it all again in the
BIT at St Andrews on the following day. The Club committee congratulates The Bloke on his superior performance and all other winners on
the day. The Committee also points out that those that didn’t make to this
year event did themselves a true disservice missing out on mixing with some
of the finest gentlemen on the planet (or at least that was agreed position
of those in attendance). |
