Don Johnson 11th March 2013 Waterford Valley |
Event Report: ‘The Don Does it Again’ March 11th
2013: So it proved to be hot, seriously hot!
And it was a warm day as well as the ten contenders stepped onto the tee to
contest the first Triggered Major since 2011. The first group to front up was
very impressive including The Bloke,
Slugger and Rubber Man, followed by an equally impressive lot including Pup, Freddie Five Iron and Don Johnson. And to round out the tour
in the third group were Stavros, The
Hanging Judge, The Cardinal and the Tanunda
Kid. Hence, the gallery were bursting with anticipation as the
competition got underway (see TM 1 player Conditions took their
toll: As everyone knows, nnomads
Golf Club members are a hearty bunch and on that day they needed to be. This
was because the game was played in 35 degree heat albeit on a Waterford
Valley in fantastic condition with lightning fast greens. Most of the tour
was walking making the round even more of a challenge. The exceptions to the
rule were The Cardinal and The Tanunda Kid who decided to share a
cart, a very sensible idea under the circumstances. “Someone had to carry the esky so in fact Nicko and I were providing a valuable service”
explained The Cardinal later in the
afternoon. The other notable point was the inappropriate dress of the Tanunda Kid for a 35 degree day. He
turned up in a pair of corduroy overalls and a long sleeved flannelette shirt
while the rest of the tour was in shorts and tee shirts. “Look I’m sensitive to the sun and the heat doesn’t bother we South
Australians” the ‘Kid’ explained
on the first tee. Despite this claim, the Kid
was very quiet hardly saying anything for the entire round (see on course at the TM). The Don does it again: But at the
end of the day there were only a couple of better performers who got anywhere
near even with the card. The standout was Don
Johnson who ended up 5 strokes under the card (90,23,67) and 5 strokes in front of the next contender. “Yeah well when I saw that trophy I
thought I want that for my mantelpiece” explained Don later during the presentations. The other standout,
particularly in those conditions, was The
Hanging Judge (96,24,72)
who ended up even with the card and 4 strokes in front of The Bloke (95,20,75) in outright
third. The Hanging Judge took out
both NTPs (reinforcing an excellent performance), Slugger and Pup shared
the longest drives and Rubber Man
took out the Endeavour award. A celebration of The
Don: So as you can imagine the presentations
back at the car park clubhouse were a true celebration of The Don’s sensational performance (see
TM 1 Presentations).
Again, the only South Australian player in the competition - The Tanunda Kid was very quiet throughout
the proceedings albeit able to consume the available refreshments at a rapid
rate (but understandable in the conditions). The Club committee congratulates Don Johnson on his first win of 2013 and indeed all winners on
the day. The committee notes that Slugger
still leads the club championship in 2103 and needs some competition to make
it interesting. The implications are clear – get out for the next major event
– The ‘Blessed are the Big Nose’
cup on Good Friday. See you there. |
