Event Report:

‘Curtis comes back with the Cup’

Tuesday 5th November 2013: Fortunately Café de-Steph was back in operation this year albeit in a different location being the Yarrambat Park instead of Yarra Bend car park. This of course meant that players in the Melbourne Cup Cup 2013 could have a coffee or tea and croissants before the game, a long term MCC tradition that had gone off the rails the previous year. “After last year’s debarkle I was starting to wonder but my faith has been restored.” quipped a somewhat relieved Cinders as he chomped into his second short black and strawberry covered croissant. “Excuse me! Last year was totally misreported. Café de-Steph was in full operation and I received a full apology from the committee if you all remember” stated The Bloke rather forcefully as the congregating players showed reducing interest and moved off towards the club house for a practice putt or two.

Quality field: Now as most readers would understand, The Melbourne Cup Cup has always attracted a quality field and this year was no exception. For example the first group off the tee included Event sponsor Pup, Life MCC member Cinders, club championship leader Don Johnson and Stavros the Greek. They were followed by a very impressive second group with Club Champion The Bloke, last year’s MCC champion Nurse Min and multi event winner Slugger. And if that wasn’t enough to illustrate quality, the last group consisted of his magnificence The Cardinal, event sponsor Rubber Man, man from the country Timmo, and back from a supposed long term injury Curtis (see MCC player groups 2013). “Solid is right. I thought I was in with a show until I saw the full player list” admitted Pup after the game.

Another Yarrambat day on course: Despite the normal hassles with the Yarrambat Park course management who stuck an outsider in the middle group, the course was in perfect condition which complimented the perfect weather. This meant that competitors had a superb environment in which to compete. Hence, no one was surprised when a number of members stepped up to the challenge including Rubber Man who was looking sensational at the turn and came in with 94 off the stick, The Bloke who was looking equally dangerous and came home with 92 off the stick, Pup who was consistent all day delivering a 96 of the stick, and of course Slugger who tempered his slice to come in 97 off the stick. Further, there were displays of brilliance all over the course which entertained the huge and ever present gallery throughout the morning. “Yeah, hundreds of kangaroos as usual. I assume that’s what you are talking about?” asked The Cardinal after reading the previous sentence (see On course in 2013).

Curtis comes back with the Cup: But of course all that was irrelevant because the Melbourne Cup Cup is a Callaway event in which a Callaway handicap is calculated based on each players performance on the day. And as event sponsor Pup was reading out the place getters during the presentations, there was one player name that was not being mentioned. “Well strictly that is not true. My name wasn’t mentioned in the winners list all day” corrected Cinders indignantly, who received multiple agreeing nods from other non-prize getters in attendance. “And all that bumph about being supposedly injured and supposedly damaged and supposedly unable to play for 18 months, what a crock of shit eh” suggested Markus Octavious by text as the final result was released on Twitter. “Freddie has a lot to answer for” added in-the-know Don Johnson as event sponsor Pup finally revealed that Curtis (95,21,74) had taken out the event by two strokes from The Bloke (92,16,76) and Slugger (97,21,76) in equal second place. And just to press the point home, Curtis got a nearest the pin and a longest drive leaving not a lot for others to win. But in fact, and quite deservedly, Rubber Man and Don Johnson took out the remaining nearest the pins giving the presentations an ever so slightly wider focus (see MCC presentations 2013 including the 2013 MCC presentation video). “I told you guys you needed to practice ….but of most importance I have to thank Fritz….” started out Curtis as the din from the gallery threatened to drown him out (see MCC 2103 winners speech).

The Club committee congratulates Curtis on a fabulous return to the nnomads GC circuit and of course all prize winners on the day. The committee also thanks event sponsors ‘De Bros Inc.’ for putting on yet another piece of history again underpinning the longest running competition on the nnomads Golf Club calendar.
