Don Johnson 29th March 2013 Amstel Golf Club |
Event Report: ‘The Don Does it Again, Again’ March 29th 2013: Well
this year there was a call to run the ‘Blessed
are the Big Nose’ Cup at a different venue, somewhere new and exciting,
somewhere inspiring, a quality course we hadn’t played at before. But as it
turned out the only criteria that lived up to those expectations was the fact
we hadn’t played there before. Unfortunately, Amstel Golf Club proved to be
uninspiring and certainly not what you would call a ‘quality’ course. But did
it matter? Cream of the crop were
contenders: Of course not, because the
cream of the crop turned out for this year’s event including The Bloke, Slugger and The Cardinal in
the first group and Stavros, Don
Johnson and Rubber Man in the
second group. Yes it was a select tour of six contenders in the 2103 competition
and contenders they were, or at least they claimed to be on the first tee
(see BBNC 2013 player groups). A fearsome challenge: So Amstel is a tired old 6,070 meter 72.7 ACR course that
charges $25 on a public holiday. “As
soon as they said $25 I started to wonder. Our local mini golf course charges
more than that and that’s pretty run down” observed Rubber Man as he stepped onto the first tee. But that proved to
be all part of the challenge because the fairways lacked cover, the bunkers
hadn’t been raked in years and your ball took air when putting on the greens
because they were so lumpy. “Challenge
is right. The bunkers were like cement and the fairways weren’t much better” observed
Slugger looking for an excuse as he
later accepted the Endeavour Award
for having 14 strokes on a short par 4, but that another story. Mind you, it
must be said the weather was very pleasant as was the company making oncourse
activity much better than it sounded (see on course at the BBNC 2013). The DON has a ‘big nose’: So
while some competitors were complaining about the conditions The Don was plodding along putting in
a very consistent effort. He was a couple of strokes in front of Stavros at the turn and then increased
his lead as the rest of the field fell afoul of the course. At the end of the
round The DON was one under the
card (94,23,71) and seven strokes in front of Stavros in outright second (105,27,78) a sensational performance
under the conditions. “Yeah but the
handicaps hadn’t been done. After his last win he his handicap should have
been slashed” suggested The Bloke at
the presentations, which wasn’t the case because while The DON’s handicap would have come in, he still would have won by
clear five or six strokes. Presentations in a mullock heap: So this laid the basis for a truly wonderful celebration during
the presentations which were held in the middle of a construction zone in the
Amstel GC car park. It was a particularly wonderful celebration because the
win meant The Don had won back to
back titles (because Don also won
the Triggered Major a few weeks ago). “I’ve
frankly had a gutful. That will be enough of that” proclaimed The Cardinal after The Tanunda Kid presented Don with the most sought after perpetual
‘Blessed are the Big Nose’ Cup trophy. “What
a wonderful course. What a wonderful course” started The Don in his acceptance speech which in fact wasn’t much longer
than that (see 2103 BBNC
Winner’s speech). And of course the presentations also celebrated the
other prize winners on the day including Stavros
in second place, The Bloke for a
sensation NTP, and Slugger for an
equally sensational NTP and for winning the Endeavour award (see 2013 BBNC presentations). Note:
The Don also took out the longest drive further illustrating his championship
winning performance. The Club committee congratulates The DON for doing it again and again and of course all winners on
the day. The committee also points out that Don has now taken the lead in the 2013 club championship displacing
previous leader Slugger after these
sensational pair of wins (see YTD
club championship results). The committee expresses its disappointment
that last year’s winner, The Maroon
Breasted Warbler didn’t turn up to defend his championship but
compliments The Tanunda Kid for at turning
up for the presentations, albeit with very little conversation. |

This month’s competition: Who stupidly suggested
the BBNC should be played at Amstel GC?
