Event Report: ‘Rubber Man Bounces Back’ 25th April
2013 – Lest we forget: So
this year no one forgot the tee off time for the annual running of the ANZAC
Day medal at the Growling Frog. And indeed no one cancelled at the last minute
either (although The Cardinal inadvertently
booked a place before remembering that Essendon was playing Collingwood at
the ‘G’). “It slipped my mind Agnes. I
don’t know what I was thinking” claimed The Cardinal when he rang back 5 minutes later to cancel his
booking. Age shall not weary them, nor the
years condemn: As
was expected, there was a great turn out for this year’s event including a
number of past ANZAC Day medal champions (at least one past ADM champion in every
group) and a number of would be ADM champions. For example, the first group onto
the tee included Rubber Man, BOHO and The Bloke (2011 ADM Champion) followed closely by Pup, Slugger (2009 and 2010 ADM
champion) and The Hanging Judge (2006
ADM Champion). Not to be out done, the final group included Freddie Five Iron, Don Johnson (YDT
championship leader), Markus Octavious (2008 ADM Champion) and Stavros the Greek (2012 ADM Champion).
In effect there was only one past ADM champion missing (Thombei The Mist – but not condemned for his absence), showing that the excitement
of the ANZAC Day challenge had not waned nor the players wearied over the
years (see ADM Player Groups 2013). They shall not grow
old: Unlike last year, the course was in fabulous
condition and the weather just perfect setting up ideal conditions for golf. There
was no obvious excuse for any player to underperform and the gallery was
expecting a high standard of play. So I’m not sure quite what happened out on
the course because despite the pleasant atmosphere and enthralling
conversation (Curtis turned up for
a chat during the last 9) the scores didn’t reflect the best event results seen
in recent times. This was despite some sensational individual performances including
The Hanging Judge (birdied the 2nd
after a brilliant NTP), Markus Octavious (who sunk a huge 5 metre putt on the 8th
winning himself the Endeavour Award), and The Bloke who had 5 pars in the first 9 holes (see on course at the 2013 ADM). Rubber Man Bounces
Back: But at the end of the day it was Rubber
Man (101,24,77) who bounced back into the limelight to take out the event
by one stroke from Stavros The Greek
(106,28,78) with The Hanging Judge
(102,23,79) and The Bloke
(99,20,79) a further stroke behind in equal third place. Mind you, it should
be said that Stavros originally
announced that BOHO had taken out
third place before The Bloke
quietly sidled up to point out the mistake followed closely by The Hanging Judge who did the same. “Look I like to win a prize as much as the
next man so I thought it was important that were recognised for our achievements”
explained The Bloke to the
media later that evening. “I want to emphasise
that it wasn’t about the prizes. I just wanted to help the club avoid the embarrassment
of a committee of enquiry, although a ball or two never goes astray” added
The Hanging Judge as he left the
press conference. At the going down of
the sun: It should also be said the post-game
warm down and presentations were particularly enjoyable thanks to Curtis who produced and cooked sausages
with onions in bread and homemade relish for all. And of course the true
gentleman that Rubber Man is, acknowledged Curtis’s
efforts in his winner’s speech. “It
was a wonderful day, extremely good company and a BBQ to finish. What man
could ask for more” he stated as the adoring crowd look on (see 2013 winner speech). It
should also be pointed out that The
Hanging Judge took out two NTPs and The
Bloke took out an NTP and a longest drive rounding out the prize winners
on the day (see ADM 2013
presentations). The committee congratulates Rubber Man on his return to the
winners circle and indeed all winners on the day. The committee also reminds members
that the year is but young and anyone can win the Club Championship in 2013.
So book your place in the VOMIT scheduled to run on the Queen’s birthday
weekend in June. Detailed results: ANZAC Day

did Curtis get the sausages from?
