Event Report:

‘Cardinal Claims Classic

Friday 12th October 2012: Well it promised to be a cold windy day, which it was, with potential rain to boot, but it didn’t. This meant the 2012 Tulum Sands Callaway Classic would be a challenging event in more ways than one, which it was, encouraging the weak of mind or body to withdraw, which they did - the wimps! But all those who did come to compete (16 contenders turned up), were very glad they did because it was a wonderful day. “It might have been wonderful for the interlopers, but we had to put up with their moaning about the cold and wind, and how they never play in these conditions, and how they should be given some compensation like a stroke on their handicaps, and how badly they are done by, and on and on and on.” recalled The Cardinal at a post competition media conference, but that’s another story.

Quality field: The real story was the quality of the field in 2012 which came from five Australian states, included the majority of past TSCC champions, and a regular contingent of Top 30 players on the annual nnomads Golf Club sanctioned event circuit. It was always going to be a hard fought competition with all players focused getting hold of a most sought after TSCC ‘trophy - The Old Mug! The quality and national nature of the field was perfectly illustrated by the first group onto the tee containing The Cardinal, The Tanunda Kid, Critey and Shags. Similarly, the second group included the Maroon Breasted Warbler, Clean-Phil (or ‘Clean’ for short), Thombei the Mist and Nurse Min. Maintaining the quality and national theme, followed The Bloke, Pup, Freddie Five Iron and the Mild Colonial Boy, with the final group consisting of The Captain, Stavros, The Hanging Judge and Billy (see 2012 player groups). With a player list like that anything could happen, and it did!

Preparation paid off: As you would expect, most players had prepared carefully for such a prestigious event to ensure their performances would come up to par. For example, there was a great turnout for the Long Lunch the previous day (12 attendees - see snaps of The Long Lunch), and ‘Clean’ even purchased a new second hand driver in celebration of his debut at Flinders Golf Club (or indeed on any course). “Look I didn’t need a driver at Uralba but I thought one might be useful on a real golf course” explained ‘Clean’ just prior to tee off. And of course there were some sensational performances including Freddie Five Iron winning a longest drive with a five iron (logically), all NTPs and the other Longest Drive going to the interlopers (what happened to the Mexicans?), ‘Clean’ hitting the highest recorded score in a nnomads Golf Competition ever, and the Tanunda Kid being best off the stick (again where were the Mexicans eh?). It was obvious the pre-game preparation had paid off when you saw the quality of the golf on course that day (see – on course in 2012).

A Callaway event: As usual, this was a Callaway event and the results depended entirely on the player’s Callaway handicap calculated on the day. As it turned out, all except one competitor was within five strokes of the winner on net 75 strokes, illustrating the difficulty of the conditions and close fought nature of the competition.

Chip-off to determine winner: As is not unusual for the TSCC, multiple players came in on the winning score triggering a play-off or chip off on Balnarring Beach. So this year it was The Cardinal and Stavros that fought it out trying to pitch balls into a bucket further down the beach, watched by a gallery of fascinated competitors and fans (see snaps of Chip-off). And, in the end it was the Cardinal who prevailed relegating Stavros to 2nd place; just in front of event sponsor Thombei the Mist just one stroke behind in outright third place. Then there were a string of six players in equal fourth place including The Hanging Judge, Pup, Shags, Critey, Nurse Min and the Maroon Breasted Warbler. Tell me that’s not a close field.

Celebrations at presentations: Well you can imagine the celebrations at the presentations after the playoff (which actually occurred during the presentations). The Cardinal was over the moon with his win and made sure everyone knew it, as he rightfully should. He also made sure the interlopers knew that three Mexicans took out the top three places. Mind you, it was clear the interlopers were generally very happy with their performances too and indeed their chances in the BIT the following day. “It wasn’t their performances that were making them happy” observed Nurse Min as he helped himself to more wine generously donated by special sponsor Kaesler Wines (www.kaesler.com.au). Hence, the Thombei the Mist and Stavros led presentations were a somewhat long and celebrated affair in part driven by the fact there was a long list of prize winners, in part driven by a long chip-off in the middle, and driven in part by Thombei’s and Stavros’s inability to say anything in a short and concise way (see 2012 TSCC presentations).

The Club committee congratulates The Cardinal on his sensational performance and all other winners on the day. The committee also acknowledges and thanks event sponsor Tombei the Mist and his staff for another sensational event.
