Shags (Don Johnson) 1st December 2012 Kingston Links |
Event Report: ‘DJ does a SHiT’ Saturday 1st December 2012: In the words of event sponsor Don Johnson, it was a good
day for golf. The cloudy, humid weather gave way to a warm sun kissed
afternoon as participants gathered at Kingston links for the chance to win a truly
prestigious trophy ….. or something to that
effect. But he was right because Kingston Links was in perfect condition and
the weather was kind for the annual running of the Shanksy
Invitational Tournament (SHiT). Quality albeit depleted field: There were seven
quality players in this year’s event including event sponsor Don Johnson, Stavros, The Cardinal and
Freddie Five Iron in the first
group, and Thombei The Mist, Rubber Man and Markus Octavious
in the second and final group. Players could see the clear opportunities
created by some notable absentees setting up a sensational day of
competition (see SHiT 2012 player groups). “It’s a rare opportunity to win a major of this calibre” observed
Don as he briefed the field on the first tee. Fierce on-course
competition: And once again, that’s what
it turned out to be, a tough competition. In fact, you could feel the fierce
inter-player rivalry as the competitors tore up the course, all hungry to get
their names on the prestigious SHiT trophy. Great
examples included Markus Octavious who got a par on a par five (earning him
the ‘endeavour’ award), Rubber Man
who was driving like you wouldn’t believe taking out both longest drives, The Cardinal who was consistently
playing under his handicap and a real contender throughout, and event sponsor
Don Johnson who was ‘pitch’ perfect
taking out two nearest the pins (see on
course at the SHiT 2012). DJ Does a SHiT: As you can imagine, the atmosphere was palpable as players waited for the final results to be announced
at the back of the Kingston Links car park after the game. And once again,
there was a mix up with the results although this did not become apparent
until the results were checked the following day. What was apparent as the
‘order of merit’ was slowly read out from backmarker to first place (see
video highlights of ‘order of merit’ announcement – warning large file), was
that Stavros had come in even with
the card and in third place (100, 28, 72), The Cardinal had come in two under the card in second place (96,
26, 70) and Don Johnson had come in
six under the card, easily taking out the SHiT
championship for 2012. “I’d like to thank
those who didn’t turn up today …” emphasized Don to the adoring crowd
after presenting himself with the trophy. “A
well organised event and a worthy winner” Don continued, obviously very
happy at winning his own event for the first time (see video of SHiT
2012 winners speech, photos of 2012 SHiT
presentations and a note from the
sponsor). Some controversy as usual: As
you would expect, there was some controversy during and after the
presentations driven in part by Thombei The Mist
noticing there was a quorum present creating an opportunity to amend the nnomads Golf Club rules (which led to an hour long
debate, multiple votes most of which were unsuccessful, and a new rule being
introduced – see latest issue of Around the Traps), and
in part by The Cardinal making a
slight miscalculation on Freddie’s
score (which resulted in Freddie
being awarded a ball for equal third and Markus
being given the ‘Pineapple’ award. The correct result was that Stavros was outright third, and Freddie should have got the
‘Pineapple’ award). “Now I know I have
a history of scoring mistakes, but this time it was clearly The Cardinal’s
fault” stated Stavros
defensively to a media scrum while holding up the offending score care card
(see offending score card
illustrating The Cardinal’s
mistake). “Have you ever heard of
checking the scores Stavros?” retorted The Cardinal when approached by a reporter some days later? The Club committee congratulates Don Johnson on winning his own event for the first time and of
course all winners on the day. The Committee notes there is only one more
opportunity to prevent Stavros
winning the nnomads Golf Club championship for 2012
and that’s the Santa Decanter on the 29th of December. So put the date
in your diary and book early. |
