Event Report: ‘BC has a Big Nose’ April 6th 2012: And
so it came to pass, that is, the resurrection on Good Friday of the ‘Blessed are the Big Nose’ Cup which
wasn’t run last year because it was too close to ANZAC day, which would have
meant two major events in three days, which was deemed too much for nnomads members at the time (because it clashed with a
lawn bowls tournament). And the people came to that blessed spot, being
Yering Meadows at the foot of the Yarra Valley on that sacred of days. Impressive field: Indeed it was an excellent turnout under the circumstances
with a strong field on course to compete for one of the most sought after
trophies available on the nnomads Golf Club event
calendar. For example, the first group onto the tee included the 2011 nnomads Golf Club Champion ‘The Bloke’, the 2010 nnomads Golf Club
Champion ‘Pup’ and the 2009 nnomads Golf Club Champion ‘Slugger’. And if that wasn’t enough to impress you then the
second group will because it included the ‘Maroon
Breasted Warbler’ who had flown in from Queensland especially for the
event, The ‘Cardinal’ returning
from the dead on the most appropriate of days, and ‘Rubber Man’ who had also returned from the dead (but did so a few
months ago, hence was available to play on the day – but that another story).
And to top it all off was the final group which included ethnic television
star ‘Stavros the Greek’, paramedic
extraordinaire ‘Nurse Min’ and
international wanderer and full time earth tuner ‘Shags’. Hence, the scene was set for some stiff competition (see
BBNC player groups 2012). Fierce competition: Now Yering Meadows is a magnificent 6,066 meter, ACR 72 (blue
tees) twenty seven hole course located at the base of the Yarra Valley with
sensational views over the valley. The twenty seven holes means there are
three different combinations of nine holes available to play and the BBNC
2012 was played on the Homestead
course (holes 19 to 27 and holes 1 to 9), a challenge for any player. This
set the scene for some fierce competition and that was exactly what happened
(see on course at the BBNC 2012.
Note: There aren’t any photos of Group 1 because they were so far ahead in
play that they disappeared into the distance… or was
that because Group 2 were so slow they didn’t keep up). BC has a ‘big nose’: At the end
of the competition there were two standout performers being the current nnomads Golf Club champion ‘The Bloke’ and the ‘Maroon
Breasted Warbler’. They were stand out because they were the only two
players to end up anywhere near to the card net on nnomads
handicap with the rest of the field up in the eighties on net score. ‘The Bloke’ had a good day taking out
an NTP, a longest drive (almost 2 LDs) and coming in second on handicap (96,21,75). But it wasn’t good enough to beat BC who ended up net 72 strokes, even
with the card (101,29,72) and two strokes in front.
This was a particularly impressive performance by BC who had swanned into
town to attend a concert the night before, then played in and won the BBNC
during the day on the Friday and then flew out to Queensland later that
night. “It’s a tough schedule for we
superstars but someone has to do it.” explained BC to the media as he
stepped into the limousine taking him to the airport. Presentations were a sizzle: Now
the day was particularly enjoyable because of the generosity of Slugger who made ‘Man’s world’ available to the nnomads
Golf Club for the purposes of the presentations. Further, Slugger cooked up a
swag of sausages on the BBQ to sate the appetites of all who attended
the presentations (Thanks Slugger!). However, the presentations were
dominated by BC and The Bloke who took out most of the
major prizes although Pup won a
ball for a fantastic NTP and Shags
took out a Longest Drive (just beating The
Bloke to another ball - see BBNC
2012 presentations). BC drops a bombshell: As you
would expect, the gallery in attendance went wild as Event sponsor, Nurse Min presented BC with the Big Nose trophy for 2012
and all was going well as BC congratulated himself on behalf of Minnow during
the trophy presentation (see BBNC 2012 champion
speech). But then BC dropped a bombshell that left everyone in attendance
aghast. He refused to take the trophy with him claiming he didn’t have enough
room in his luggage and didn’t want to carry it as hand luggage on the plane.
He then went onto to announce that he wouldn’t be back next year to
defend his championship win because he had previous commitments already
scheduled into his program! Well, you could have heard a pin drop as the media jostled for
position as BC walked towards his limousine. And as he drove off into the
distance it was Nurse Min who broke the ice saying “So a burglar from QLD came and stole our Big Nose cup but had the
unmitigated gall to refuse to take it with his carry-on luggage, ie: a double insult..... Not only have they decimated
Labour, they are golf bandits as well....... there's only one thing for it,
'revenge'! We'll lure him back down for the BIT and 'dack
him when he least expects it...... wwhhoooaaa...haaa, whooa..ha
ha ha”. The Club committee congratulates BC on his convincing win in
the second major of 2012 and of course all winners on the day. The committee
also reminds BC of the responsibility that comes with being a nnomads champion and the obligation to adhere to the ‘nnomads GC code of professional behaviour’
which requires all major event winners to defend their titles (unless they
have a good excuse). It should be noted that the disciplinary committee has
decided not to sanction BC on this
occasion subject to his behaviour at the BIT later in the year. |
