Event Report: ‘Stavros sneaks in as the sun goes down’ 25th April
2012 – Lest we forget: Lest we forget that the spirit of the ANZACs lives
on as was exampled by those hardy souls who turned up ready to play in an extreme
weather golf competition at the Growling Frog, last ANZAC day (or so they
thought). But you would be tempted to forget
those wimpy souls who cancelled at the last minute including The Hanging Judge (urgent case came
up), Rubber Man (back playing up), Markus Octavious
(elbow playing up), Curtis (wrist playing up) and Pup (mind playing up). The night before the event, Agnes (Event
Manager) was almost distraught trying to keep the course management and the
media up to date! Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn: But who are we to judge the
veracity of the excuses rolled out in the 24 hours prior to the event which
happened to coincide with the Bureau of Meteorology releasing weather reports
predicting solid rain and cold temperatures around the competition tee off
time and sometime after that? No! We won’t condemn those unreliable, wimpy
bastards, which is a bit rough on a couple of them because they changed their
minds and turned up anyway. These two guys faced their responsibilities and
commitments, saw the flaw in their previous logic, swallowed their pride and
stepped up to the task at hand. These are the sort of guys you really look up
to; the sorts of guys you aspire to emulate, you marvel at their level of
commitment, and are particularly glad they were there to share in the cost of
the golf carts. They shall not grow old: And those two immortals were Curtis who saw the light as the sun was rising on the morning of
the event and Markus Octavious who
sent a text message to withdraw his withdrawal within twenty minutes of
withdrawing from the competition during the previous night. That boosted the
total field back to seven competitors including Shags, Slugger, Stavros, Nurse Min and Freddie Five Iron (see ADM Player Groups 2012). It’s the
drive and spirit demonstrated by these competitors that explains why they
will be forever young (in their own minds). And what of the golf you ask? It was
sensational albeit a little damp for the first few
holes. The course was in excellent condition particularly when the overnight
rain was considered and when the sun came out it was a very pretty sight. And
some very good golf was played amongst all the socialising and camaraderie on
display. Typical examples included a sensational NTP from Freddie, a similarly impressive NTP by
Curtis, another
equally impressive NTP from Nurse Min
and a brilliant Longest Drive from Stavros
(see on course at the 2012 ADM). At the going down of
the sun: But there can only be one winner and
that proved to be Stavros the Greek
(98.28,70) who piped Shags at the post by a single stroke (94,23,71). Hence, the
presentations back in the club house (car park) were very entertaining as the
deserving prize winners were acknowledged one by one (see ADM 2012 presentations). And of
course the post presentation celebrations went on for some time until the sun
stated to fade on another nnomads Golf Club major
event. The committee congratulates Stavros on his continuing form in 2012
and indeed all winners on the day. The committee also reminds members that
the Bureau of Meteorology is often wrong and should not be considered
when there is an opportunity to play golf. Detailed results: ANZAC Day

did Freddie famously take cover under on the fifth green?
