Jack (The Hanging Judge) 7th October 2011 Flinders Golf Club |
Event Report: ‘Classic Callaway for Judge Friday 7th October 2011: It was a fantastic turnout on a breathless overcast day, the
perfect scenario for the annual running of the Tulum Sands Callaway Classic,
another Thombei the Mist sponsored
event. And as usual it was held at Flinders Golf Club on the Mornington
Peninsular in Victoria with its magnificent views out over Westernport bay. Stiff competition: I say
fantastic turnout because 18 competitors turned up to contest ‘The Mug’ and what a quality lot they
were. For example the first group onto the tee included The Tanunda Kid, Afheed, Teflon and Critey followed in the 2nd group by The Dream, Billy, The Hanging Judge
and The Captain. If that isn’t
enough to prove the point, the third group contained Nurse Min, Mild Colonial Boy and Pup followed by the fourth with Freddie, The Maroon Breasted Warbler and Shags, and the last group with JB, Slugger, The Bloke and event sponsor Thombei the Mist (see 2011
player groups). With a list of notorious names like that it was clear
there would be some stiff competition.
Some great performances: Not
to disappoint, there were some great performances on the day, which was
somewhat surprising after ‘The Long
Lunch’ the day before and the night that followed (see snaps of The Long Lunch). Keeping in Mind that
Flinders GC is an ACR and PAR 69 stroke, 5277 metre course, four players shot
well under card including Slugger
who played a sensational 89 off the stick (net 64 strokes), The Tanunda Kid with 88 strokes and
lowest off the stick (net 65 strokes), The
Bloke with 90 (net 67) and The
Hanging Judge (91 – Net 67 strokes). Judged on Callaway: But of course all that was irrelevant because this was a Callaway event and so the results
depended entirely on the player’s Callaway handicap calculated on the day.
And that is where the Hanging Judge
brought down the hammer gaining a Callaway handicap of 21 strokes (net 70);
enough to take out the event convincingly for 2011 (see detailed Callaway
results below). The Dream and the Tanunda Kid came in equal 2nd
(net 72 strokes) as they did last year, and Slugger, Billy and The
Captain came in equal 3rd (net 74 strokes). Minor but
significant achievements included Billy,
The Maroon Breasted Warbler and Pup taking out the NTPs and Afheed and Pup taking out the longest drives. Hence, it was a riotous
presentation back at ‘Chez Thombei’
prior to sensational sumptuous seafood to set off the night (see 2011 TSCC presentations). The Club committee congratulates The Haning Judge on his memorable performance and all other
winners on the day. And of course thanks to event sponsor Tombei the Mist and his staff for
another fabulous event. |
