Event Report:

‘Mist Thwarts The Bloke’

Tuesday 4th November 2011: Surprisingly Life Member of the Melbourne Cup Cup tour Ashleigh was not first on scene at the Yarra Bend car park this year but arrived pretty soon after because he didn’t want to miss out on the delights of Café de Steph which as usual was well and truly firing by 6.30 am serving the traditional coffee and croissants one expects at this famous event (see ‘Café de Steph’ 2011). And of course the highly sought after MCC trophy was on display to remind competitors what was up for grabs on this auspicious occasion.

Strong competition: As you would expect the player line-up for 2011 was solid including Thombie The Mist, co-event sponsor Pup, Championship leader The Bloke and MCC Life member Ashleigh in the first group, followed by Markus Octavious, Shags and Nurse Min in the 2nd group with Teflon, Freddie and co-event sponsor Bull in the final group. With a line up like this it was clear there would be some strong competition on course (see MCC player groups 2011).

Perfect day for golf: And that’s exactly what happened as competitors worked their way around the Yarra Bend layout in what turned out to be an absolutely perfect day for golf (see On course in 2011). And as usual the Callaway handicapping system did it again producing a set of results where the tour ended up within a five strokes of each other at the end of the round (see detailed results below).

Three way play off: But unlike last year where there was a clear winner, this year three players stood out from the crowd being The Bloke, Shags and Thombie the Mist who all came in on Net 75 strokes. This of course triggered a playoff or play up which turned into a chip off and subsequent putt off. In essence it was an elimination saga with multiple iterations entertaining the gallery for quite some minutes. Shags was first to fall on his sword getting stuck in a bunker leaving The Mist and The Bloke to fight it out. Then, the Bloke blew his putt leaving himself a must get putt to stay in the game (which he missed). But Thombie had other ideas taking advantage of the situation and putting his in to take the title for 2011 (see footage of the 2011 playoff).

Winners acknowledged: As usual the prize winners were acknowledged including Markus Octavious who won the shot of the day with a 30 meter chip into the hole on the 7th, Freddie who won the 2011 Narga award, Steph who came 2nd, won a longest drive and two NTPs, Shags who came 3rd, Bull who won an NTP, Pup who won the other longest drive and of course Thombie who took out the other NTP and the event overall (see presentations 2011).

The Club committee congratulates Thombie and of course all prize winners on the day. And a special thanks to event sponsors ‘De Bros Inc.’ for putting on another sensational event.
