Report: ‘A BIT For Teflon’ Saturday 8th
October 2011: Once again it was a
sensational turnout at St Andrews Beach (rated 10th best public
course in Australia) for the annual running of the Balnarring Invitational
Tournament (BIT) for 2011. Once again it was a breathless perfect day for
golf, as one would expect for one of the most glamorous events on the nnomads Golf Club annual major event circuit. A Dapper led field: Event
sponsor Nurse Min was looking very
dapper as he led the first group off the tee which included The Tanunda Kid, The Bloke and Mild Colonial
Boy. This was somewhat surprising considering Min’s last recorded
position the night before (being fast asleep in a chair by the fire on the
beach in the small hours with his mouth wide open…..don’t tell anyone but
here is a reminder of the scene at the time – see Nurse Min in fine form).
Second onto the tee were Teflon, Afheed and Markus
Octavious who were closely followed in the
third group by Pup, Thombei
the Mist, The Dream and Billy
before the fourth group - The Hanging
Judge, Critey, Bull and The Captain, and finally the fifth group with Shags, Slugger, Pitte
Man and The Maroon Breasted Warbler.
And if you were counting that made nineteen competitors in this challenge for
the highly sought after BIT plate trophy (see BIT player groups 2011). Fearsome competition with casualties: As one would expect the competition was fierce. In fact, it
was so tough on course that there were two casualties during play including The Maroon Breasted Warbler who
injured his wing and couldn’t complete the course, and The Tanunda Kid who injured his mojo and couldn’t complete the
course (finally died in a bunker on the last). The remaining seventeen
players successfully completed this magnificent Tom Doak
designed layout and ‘in style’ to
say the least (see on course at the BIT
in 2011). Teflon slides one in: When I say ‘in style’ I mean in the ‘style’ that nnomads
always approach such competitions as exampled by Critey
who famously said ‘Never let the golf get in the way’. And of course he is right, because
those who prevail under the pressure of competition get into the zone, that mental state of mind that
makes the difference under pressure. And that was exampled by a group of four
players who gained a break over the rest of the field. And what do you know
it included Nurse Min who ended up even with the card (106,36,70)
and outright third, a stunning performance in anyone’s language. Then in
equal second place on handicap were Afheed (103, 34, 69) and Mild Colonial Boy (87,18,69) both under
the card and again stunning performances in anyone’s language. But the
performance of the day went to Teflon
who lost numerous balls yet prevailed by one stroke (99,31,68),
a two under the card performance, and enough to take Balnarring Invitational
Tournament for 2011. “I’ve always
aspired to winning the BIT. It’s a dream come true” smiled Teflon at the
media during the post-game press conference. Fiery presentations: Actually,
the results weren’t known for some hours and were announced around the fire
back at ‘Chez Mins’ later that
night. There was a real build up as Steve, Jack and Nicko
were recognised for their Nearest the
Pins, and then Shanksy and Steph for their
Longest Drives, not to mention BC for his Narga award, or Min, Emile and
Tony for their place-getting. But the focus of the night was on the new
champion Teflon, who was as
surprised as anyone but delighted to get his name on anything let alone the highly
sought after BIT plate trophy (see 2011 BIT presentations). The committee congratulates Harry on his superb performance,
his first win in this most prestigious event. And the committee congratulates
all other prize winners on the day and wants to thank event sponsor Minnow because without his outstanding
accommodation and facilities the event couldn’t be what it is (And in fact Thombei as well
if we didn’t thank him previously). |
