Event Report: ‘Bloke Runs AMOK at Growling Frog’ January 26th
2011: The 6,185 metre, ACR 73, with water
hazards full, rough back with a vengeance; Growling Frog was in a beautiful
condition for the annual running of the Australia Masters Open Kup. There were two full groups of four talented
contenders confirmed at 5.00pm the night before competition. However, by tee
off time the field had shrunk to a huge field of five challengers. “Fools are they, all the more chance of
taking home the trophy”, sniggered the Hanging
Judge as the news came through before the game. There was a slight delay to the tee off, due in part to the
course running late because of fog earlier that morning, and due in part to
the arguing and voting (or attempts to), going on between competitors mulling
around the tee. Fortunately, there wasn’t a quorum present to vote in the
suggestion that the nnomads Golf Club changes its name to the nnomads Bowling Club, and that members
take up lawn bowls instead of golf.
The suggestion was based on the premise that more members might be able to
turn up to events, members like Curtis
with his bung wrist, The Mist with
his gammy knee, Shags with his dicky
knee, Freddie with his missing
finger, Octavious
with his tennis elbow, Bull with
his tunnel vision, BC with his
failing hip, Afheed with his faltering back and
that’s just to name a few. “It would
have to be the ‘crawling’ club because none of
those boys are in a fit state to play lawn bowls either”, observed the Cardinal. And of course he was right which sort
of took the wind out of the argument and motivation to vote on anything. It was around this point that they finally called up the first
group consisting of The Bloke, current
Club Champion Pup and The Hanging Judge. They were closely
followed by the second group consisting of Teflon and The Cardinal
(see AMOK player groups 2011).
Group 2 were joined by two hack players, one with a handicap of four and the
other with a handicap of ten, but that another story..... apart from the fact
that the guy off four strokes broke his handicap, coming in two strokes after
that round. Wow, that man could really drive a ball... but back to the story.....
Hence, the scene was set for an extremely competitive game in near perfect
conditions. And that was exactly what happened over the course of the day
(see on course at the AMOK 2011);
It evolved into an extremely competitive and close competition that came
right down to the wire. Minutes after the final group walked off the 18th
green, the referee called for a play off between the reigning nnomads golf
club champion Pup (96,18,78) and
reigning BIT champion The Bloke
(98,20,78), who ended up tied at the top of the leader board on net 78
strokes. Well you can imagine the scene; yes the gallery went wild as these recognised
champions walked back to the first tee for the play off. And you could feel
the tension building as Pub drubbed it off the tee thirty meters and the
Bloke put it down the middle. Then the club champion did it again, yes,
drubbed it again. “It’s all over red
rover..” announced the Cardinal who was doing
television commentary at the time. And he was pretty much right, apart from one
extreme opportunity for Pup to pitch it in from 40 metres to tie the hole,
but he missed (see the long version
or the short version of the television
coverage of the AMOK playoff 2011). This of course set the scene for an exciting set of
presentations at which The Bloke was presented with his AMOK trophy, Pup was
presented with prizes for second place, the Hanging judge was presented with
prizes for winning the Longest Drive and one NTP and Pup was presented with prizes
for winning the remaining NTP for the day (see AMOK 2011 presentations). The
presentations were all the more exciting because Pup was also presented with
his nnomads Golf Club championship trophy for 2010, making it a really glamorous
affair (see club championship
presentations including interview with the newly crowned champion). As
you can imagine, the press had a field day! The Club committee congratulates Steph
on his convincing win in the first major of 2011 and indeed all winners on
the day. The committee also reminds members that you too can get all this kudos
and recognition but only if you compete. So make sure you book for the next
nnomads Golf Club major event, the ‘Blessed
are the Big Nose’ Cup to be played on Good Friday. See you there. |
