Event Report: ‘Mild Moves Mug West’ Friday 8th
October 2010: Despite the threat of rain
and associated weather, it turned out to be a mild sort of day for the annual running of the Tulum Sands
Callaway Classic held this year at Flinders Golf Club on the Mornington Peninsular
in Victoria. And this year was particularly special because it was the 10th
running of the event, albeit under a variety of event names, since its
inception in October 2001. Hence, absolutely nothing was done to celebrate
the 10th anniversary other than to run the event. “The South Australians wouldn’t let an
opportunity like this go by. Where was the sit down anniversary dinner like
at the PIS? Poor form Tony, poor form” tweeted Steve from the northern
NSW coast, but that’s another story. As you might suspect from the name of the competition, this
was a Callaway event. Hence the fifteen competitors from four states (NSW,
VIC, QLD, WA and SA – see 2010
player groups) had no idea of their progress as they played their way
around the magnificent Flinders golf course in the most pleasant conditions
(see – on course in 2010). Not
that this mattered in the least illustrated by some fabulous golf on display and
the deep seated camaraderie between players. But the story of the day was the result, which was unknown
until the tour was back at Chez de
Tombei later in the afternoon, and after a beer or two or three. The
outcome was three competitors including Tony, Nicko and Rhett all ending up
on net 73 strokes. This of course triggered a play-off in the traditional
nnomads Golf Club way. And after some debate about the form of the play-off...”best of three rounds of bocce”...”No
it has to have something to do with golf”.....”why?”....”Because it just
does”... “Ok how about bocce using golf clubs?”... ‘Don’t be silly”....”Ok,
How about pitching into a bucket?”... “Now you are talking.”....”What about a
bucket is sitting down on the rocks down the beack?” ....Yeah!!!! And so it was. The quorum decided that the play off between
Nick, Rhett and Tony would be a best of three shots trying to hit a golf ball
from Tom’s front yard into a bucket sitting on some rocks a few meters off
shore from Balnarring Beach (maybe 110 metres?). To ensure an outcome, the closest to the bucket rule was invoked
which created the perfect opportunity for the Cardinal to supervise the
placement of the bucket on the rocks beyond the beach and to play the role of
measuring judge. “I felt safer standing
next to the bucket anyway. They were bound to hit it anywhere but there” commented
The Cardinal after proving his point at the conclusion of the play-off, but
that’s another story (see video of play-off on Balnarring Beach). At the end of the saga (and it was a saga, in fact you could
turn it into a feature film so we did – see playoff video – 10MB), it was the
Mild Colonial Boy who prevailed taking out the perpetual TSCC mug for 2010
with a sensation shot that was not that close to the bucket (maybe 10 to 15
metres?) but closer than the other two anyway. This left Nicko and The Dream in
equal 2nd place leading the rest of the field by a whopping one
stroke (see detailed results below). Other notable performance on the day
included Pets S with a sensational longest drive on the 7th, Nicko
again with another sensational longest drive on the 15th, Steph
with a brilliant nearest the pin on the 9th and Rhett again with
two equally brilliant nearest the pins on the 14th and 17th.
This meant that the presentations were somewhat dominated by
the top three players Tony, Nick and Rhett (see 2010 TSCC presentations), and
quite rightly so. If it wasn’t for Pete and Steph they would have scooped the
pool between them. The Club committee congratulates all winners on the day
and thanks event sponsor Tombei the
Mist and his staff for another fabulous event. If you were not there in 2010
then fool are you. It truly was a fabulous event. |
