Event Report: ‘Pup backs up with another SHiT’ Saturday 11th
December 2010: So there was a select group
of seven celebrities that fronted up at Kingston Links for the annual running
of the prestigious SHanksy Invitational Tournament including event sponsor
SHanksy, the Cardinal, Slugger, Bull, Telfon, Timbo and the Pup (see SHiT 2010 player groups). The 5,682
metre ACR 73 course was in superb condition and the weather sublime, setting
up the perfect conditions for a predictably hard fought competition. “Everyone’s a winner in
this event” encouraged Shanksy as he led
the tour away on the first and that’s what it turned out to be. In fact a number
of players showed some promising form including The Cardinal who was in the
running for much of the game, Bull who was in the running for most of the
game, Telfon who was in the running until he decided to go swimming on the 15th(or
at least his golf bag and buggy did), Pup who played the role of Mr Consistent all day, Shanksy who
just looked dangerous all day or at least until the last few holes, Timbo who
while suffering jet lag was in it to the end and Slugger who was going
strongly until he got the taste of pineapple. Hence, it was anybody’s game
for much of the afternoon (see on
course at the SHiT 2010). But there can only be one winner in an event like this and that
person normally has to rise above the pack to take the coveted SHiT trophy.
And that is exactly what happened when Pete maintained his superb form while
the rest of the field slowly fell away one by one. In fact Pup had played an
impressive round at the end of the afternoon shooting 90 strokes off the
stick giving him a net 71 strokes (after his bandit handicap of 19). This was
one stroke under the card and two strokes under the ACR, a sensational performance
in anyone language. It was all the more impressive when his winning margin is
considered, a full three strokes ahead of Teflon (100, 26, 74) and Bull (94, 20,
74) in equal second place (although Shanksy miscalculated the scores putting
Bull in third place, which deprived him of a ball at the presentations but
not a Cape Schanck pin). “It’s not
about the balls. It’s about the thrill of the chase and I recon my Cape
Schanck pin is a better colour than Harry’s anyway” suggested Bull to the
media when the controversy hit the airwaves the following day. As was expected, Shanksy was true to his promise that everyone
was a winner on the day. He personally took out one NTP and the longest
drive, the Cardinal took out the other NTP, Slugger won the pineapple award and Timbo won the Australian Cricketers award for not
winning anything...but he did in the end (see 2010 SHiT presentations). But there was nothing that could undermine Pete’s remarkable
achievement, particularly when one realises this was a back to back win (yes Pup
won the event last year too). In fact it is years and years since someone won
back to back SHiT trophies, the last one being Curtis in 2004 and 2005. “And
it couldn’t happen to a nicer, more deserving guy” added Curtis by text
message using his good arm when the news broke later that day. It was all the
more impressive when you consider that Pete slashed his handicap (down by
another stroke), regained the lead in the club championship, regained the
lead on the 2010 Bladder and took the lead in the 2010 strike rate (see members area for details).
“You can only dream of having back to
back SHiTs” stated a delighted Pup as the trophy was handed to him for
another year. The Club committee congratulates Pete on his sensational
performance and all other winners on the day (everyone). Special thanks event
sponsor SHanksy for putting on such a brilliant event. The committee once
again reminds all members that there is only one way to stop Pup from
achieving a clean sweep in 2010 and that’s to contest the last major event
for 2010, the Santa Decanter, on the 28th of December, so book now
and see you there! |
