Event Report:
Tuesday 27th
December 2010: It proved to be an excellent
turn out at the ACR 72, 6,060 metre Waterford Valley GC for the last nnomads
Golf Club major event of 2010 - The Santa
Decanter. While the rain persisted right up until tee off, the clouds
then rolled back to reveal a glorious tee shirt afternoon setting up the
perfect conditions for another hard fought club competition. And the high calibre of the competitors become obvious as the
tour stepped onto the first tee including Shags,
Afheed and The Bloke in the
first group, Telflon, Thombei the Mist,
Freddie two five irons and Pup
in the second group and The Cardinal,
Bull, The Hanging Judge and reigning club champion Slugger in the final group (see Santa Decanter 2010 player groups).
Fortunately, the designated club safety officer Thombei was on duty issuing Teflon with an emergency waterproofing
kit before tee off including a buoy complete with flag and snap lock bags for
his keys, camera and consumables. “We
don’t want any more incidents like at the SHiT eh Harry. It only slows down
play so we need a fast resolution if it happens again” explained Tom to
the tour just prior to tee off. (See event report for SHiT 2010 for
explanation). Being the last major club competition for the year, there were
a few players who still aspired to knocking Pete off the top of the
championship leader board. Hence, the atmosphere was tense as the game
unfolded over the first nine holes. Freddie was particularly tense when his
long lost five iron turned up in his bag on the third hole without
explanation. “I mean I love conspiracy
theories but I could have saved $15 if I had known it was going to turn up
again” lamented Fritz who had been to Drummond Golf prior to the game to
purchase another five iron, which by the way. he used to very good effect in
the early stages of the game. And there were others on course that looked promising during
play including Thombei who was in
fine form for most of the game, The
Bloke who was well in the running until the last few holes, Afheed who looked menacing for much of
the round and the Cardinal who
showed signs of brilliance before finally capitulating late in the round. And
being the Santa Decanter meant that socialising during play was an important
feature of this all important competition and as you can imagine competitors
took their socialising responsibilities very seriously (see on course at the Santa Decanter 2010).
So you can imagine the intense interest in the car park after
the game as the final scores were read out slowly to reveal that The Bloke had snuck into third place
(98, 20, 78), four strokes behind Thombei
the Mist in second place (96, 22, 74), who was a single stroke behind Pup
with one stroke over the card on a net 73 strokes (91, 18, 73). Hence, the
gallery erupted as last year’s winner Shanksy stood up to hand the recently
revamped, tequila filled, Santa Decanter trophy to Pete for 2010 (see Santa Decanter presentations 2010).
“Very lucky, very lucky indeed”
Pete attempted to say. But it was hard to hear him over Tom who was trying to
persuade the remaining players to stick their hands down their pants but
that’s another story (see 2010 winner interview).
It should be said that Pete’s sensational win became all the
more convincing as the minor prizes were announced. While Thombei took out
one nearest the pin, Pete took out two other nearest the pins and both
longest drives making it an almost clean sweep for the 2010 nnomads Golf Club
champion in waiting. “I’ve been saying
goodbye to the trophy all morning” confessed current club champion
Slugger, who was delighted to find he didn’t have to hand over the club
championship trophy until the results become official at the end of the year
(four days to go). “Yes the club
championship is too much to think about at this stage. I’m just delighted to
take back the Decanter albeit not filled with bitters lime and lemon”
announced an elated Pete who was wondering what the hell he was going to do
with a decanter filled with tequila. The Club committee congratulates Pete, Tom and Steph on their
sensational performances and indeed all players on the day. Clearly the
spirit of Christmas has been the winner once again setting the scene for a
new nnomads Golf Club champion to be installed in a few days time (assuming a
triggered major doesn’t displace Pete before then but anything can happen in
the world of nnomads golf eh? Unlikely!) |
