Event Report

Boz becomes a PIS head’
(or should that be ‘Boz maintains his status?)

Friday 13th August 2010: The PIS 2010 tour started early for sixteen keen competitors with a Friday warm up game at Wirrina Cove south of Adelaide in sunny warm conditions (see photos of warm up round). It proved to be the perfect preparation for the twenty player Saturday and Sunday competitions to follow at McCracken Country Club and Victor Harbor Golf Club (except for the weather which threatened to be wet and miserable over the weekend in contrast to the lovely conditions on the Friday). Being the 10th running of the PIS, there was real excitement in the air as competitors aaa nicko.jpgprogressively arrived at the Grosvenor Hotel in Victor Harbour on the Friday night. And as was expected, all competitors were in bed by 8.00pm to get a good sleep before the competition in the morning – NOT (but what happens on tour, stays on tour).

Saturday 14th PIS Part 1: The weather was shit as competitors arrived at McCracken CC on Saturday morning. The wind and rain appeared to have set in and even stronger winds were predicted for later in the day presenting some challenging playing conditions. Fortunately, few competitors really noticed the weather due in part to Tour Organiser Nicko’s compulsory shot of tawny port for all players prior to tee off (very nice – see photo right), in part due to the excitement and thrill of being on another PIS tour and in part due to the pre bed/sleep activity the night before (including lack of bed/sleep activity for some – see on course Saturday).

Now this report is not supposed to be a blow by blow account of the day’s golf. Suffice to say it was very wet and woolly for the first five holes or so before it cleared to windy but mainly dry day. In fact, conditions proved excellent for the purposes of competition and some great golf was on display (and some not so good golf but nobody let the golf get in the way). And at the end of the first day of competition there were six players under net 80 strokes including Greeny and Steve (net 79 strokes), Tony (net 78), Garry (net 75), Harry (net 74) and Rhett (net 72 strokes). But there was only one player under the Par and ACR for the course being Boz with a sensational net 68 strokes.

Diner 3.jpgA night to remember: There were twenty six tour members and blow ins seated at the huge ‘U’ shaped table in a private room leading straight on the balcony upstairs at the Grosvenor on the Saturday night. Everyone was there to enjoy the PIS 10th anniversary dinner ably hosted by Tour Organiser Nicko. And what a night it was with sumptuous food for all (most would eat anything after a hard day on the golf course), fabulous wine (courtesy of Boz and Dewy as usual), a slide show projected onto the wall during the meal covering the entire history of the PIS since 2001 (complements of Nicko and Harry), inductions of Ricko and Jacko as PIS life members (both have attended every PIS since 2001), a parade of past PIS champions (...well sort of... their pictures were up on the wall and they all stood up together at one stage), and a lot of beer. As would be expected tour players were sensible with their consumption during the evening and most retired to bed at an appropriate hour – NOT (but what happens on tour, stays on tour – see photos of the dinner).

There was one story that should be told from that night which was when past PIS champions since 2001 were called on to stand up and be recognised by Nicko during the dinner. By sheer chance all past PIS winners happened to be sitting together and stood up as a group. The really eerie thing (..nana nana nana nana..) was that Boz was sitting between them as though he was a natural part of this group of champions. And there was a gap when they all stood up because Boz didn’t stand up.  ‘It’s a sign... It’s a sign!” people were heard yelling from the floor which was a logical conclusion in light of Boz’s four stroke lead over Rhett (who couldn’t win because you can’t win the Green jacket on your first appearance) and six stroke lead over Harry and Garry in second and third place (who were both quite keen to win the PIS Green Jacket – see On course Day 1).

Sunday 15th PIS Part 2: Personally, I was surprised at how many competitors actually made it to breakfast on the Sunday morning and was again surprised that every single competitor made it to the fabulous 1st tee at Victor Harbor Golf Club and even more surprised that they all made it for a 10.am tee off (which implied that all had checked out of the hotel beforehand, which was true except that half the field had forgotten to hand in their room keys meaning someone had to go back to the hotel with a handful of keys after the game (and Ricko had lost On course day 1 - 24.jpghis mobile phone but that’s another story. He got it back by the way).

Again the weather looked menacing before the game with solid rain showers and a blustering wind as the tour left the hotel. And once again the gods shined on the tour because after some very fine mist on the first tee it was dry and sheltered for the rest of the round.  Again Tour Organiser Nicko’s compulsory shot of tawny port for all players prior to tee off (very nice) put everyone in the mood for golf (although for some reason a number of players didn’t play quite as well as they hoped, in no way due to the pre-bed/sleep activity the night before but what happens on tour, stays on tour – see on course Sunday).

Boz becomes a PIS Head: The upshot of it all was that Bozzy eventually prevailed with a net 147 strokes over the two days of competition which was five strokes in front of Harry and Tony in equal second place (on 152 strokes - but no prizes for 2nd), and seven plus strokes clear of the rest of the field (see results below). Hence, tour members loudly applauded the new holder of the ‘Green Jacket’ – BOZ as Nicko announced the results in the club house after the game.

Other award winners for PIS 2010 included Tony and Rhett who equally won the Gungagalunga Perpetual Trophy for Best-Off-The-Stick, Steve who won this year’s Bob Hope Fellowship Award,  Fruity who won the Fertility Award, Harry who won the PIS Special 10th Anniversary Fellowship Award, Rhett again, winner of the Patricia Isabel Encouragement Award (because it was noted that Tiger had a lot of things he could teach a young bloke like Rhett), and Dewy who won the NAGA 2010. Of particular note was Big A who won The Gleneagles Award for Extreme Ratbaggery which made history because it is the first time a non player (didn’t play golf either day) won an award at the PIS. You just can’t imagine what Big A did to earn this award and I would love to tell you but what happens on tour, stays on tour. It is true to say that Big A didn’t let the golf get in the way! – see winners and presentations.

The committee congratulates Tour Leader Nicko for running such a sensational event yet again. It also congratulates Boz who is clearly a worthy winner of the Green Jacket in 2010, and indeed all winners because everyone who attended the PIS 2010 was a winner. “Oh the smell of a texta pen in the afternoon” murmured Bozie as Nicko used a black texta pen to write  this year’s date onto the Jacket.
