Fang (The Cardinal) 2nd November 2010 Yarra Bend |
Event Report: ‘Cardinal Takes home a Melbourne Cup Cup
Cup’ Tuesday 2nd
November 2010: So Ashleigh was first on
scene at the Yarra Bend car park just before 7.00am on last Melbourne Cup
day. Was it because he wanted exemplify
the dedication of the only Life Member of the Melbourne Cup Cup tour (being the only person who has played in
ever event since the event’s inception in the early nineties – excluding
event sponsors ‘De Bros Inc’ of
course)? Or was it because he wanted
plenty of time to consume that freshly brewed coffee with a fresh croissant
at ‘Café de Steph’ prior to the game? I suspect it was the latter he said
knowingly (as everybody knows that Steph has just returned from France in the
previous week. Hence, his coffee brewing skills and his croissant selection
skills should be honed down to a fine art eh)? And, eventually Steph and Emilo did turn up and as would be expected, the quality
of the coffee and croissants, including a selection of jams conserves, was
sensational (particularly when you have been standing in the rain waiting for
breakfast wondering how wet you wet going to get and wondering if they would
get here before tee off). But that didn’t happen. Rather, it was a very
pleasant and relaxed scene as tour members prepared themselves to compete in
the Melbourne Cup Cup for 2010 (see ‘Café de Steph’ 2010).
Then a strange thing
happened: As the tour approached the
club house it discovered that Yarra Bend was under reconstruction and had
totally changed the course. For example, they had removed the 1st
and 2nd holes, made the last nine the first nine, made the 4th
hole the 10th hole, cut one par five into two inserting a
temporary hole and reordered the remainder of the first nine holes, which was
now the second nine. And you can imagine how The Cardinal reacted, but that’s
another story. Stiff competition: As it was, the rain disappeared soon after tee off and the
day turned into perfect conditions for a golf competition. It was like
playing a new golf course, albeit a bit compromised, as tour members strived
to outdo each other in search of the trophy (see on course at the MCC 2010). But of
course nobody could tell if they were doing well or not because it was a
Callaway event. So all you could do was to enjoy the competition which what
everyone seemed to do extremely well. A clear winner: ‘And there is a clear
winner’ announced co-event sponsor Pete as he read out the final results
under the shelter in the car park (see long version ‘The full countdown’ or the
short version ‘Winner
2010’). He was announcing that The Cardinal had won the 2010 Melbourne
Cup Cup by one stroke from Steve in 2nd
place with Shanksy one stroke behind Steve. In fact Steve got around in 86
off the stick, won the longest drive and won an NTP, a fabulous performance
in anyone language. Shanksy was equally impressive taking out the other NTP
which made him the only other winner on the day (see presentations for minor places). But
it was Fango that received the glory and deservedly so (see MCC presentations 2010). He
clearly was the better man on the day taking home his first Melbourne Cup Cup Cup to put on his
mantelpiece. “Callaway. It’s a mystery
to me.” was all he would say to the media after the presentations (but he
did issue a press release later that day see PRESS
RELEASE from the Cardinal).
The Club committee congratulates Fango, Steve and Shanksy on
their prize winning performances and thanks event sponsors ‘De Bros Inc.’ for putting on another
great event. Once again it only goes to show that if you miss out on these
events you really do miss out. So book early for the next one. |
