Steph (Bloke) 9th October 2010 St Andrews Beach |
Event Report: ‘Bloke Gets BIT’ Saturday 9th
October 2010: Players arrived early at St
Andrews Beach golf course (rated 10th best public course in
Australia) for the running of the Balnarring Invitational Tournament (BIT)
for 2010. This had nothing to do with Tombei
the Mist lying about the tee time the night before bringing it forward by
thirty minutes or so during a rambling conversation about the impending
event. Not at all. Rather, it reflected the driving desire of the eighteen
competitors from five states to win the much sort after BIT perpetual trophy
and associated bragging rights that only a select few competitors have ever
achieved (see BIT player groups 2010).
As readers would know, the BIT is one of the nnomads Golf Club
premier handicap events. Hence, nnomads handicaps were the order of the day
(although Mild Colonial Boy
complained that his new Royal Freemantle Golf Club handicap of 23 strokes
should apply rather than the nnomads handicap of 19 strokes.) “You might be a member of an exclusive
golf club in WA MILD but not on your Nellie. Its nnomads handicaps over here
and particularly after your 82 stroke performance at Flinders yesterday”
reinforced Min as he strongly explained the views of the handicapping
committee. St Andrews was in excellent condition as usual, the sun was
out, and the wind stayed away creating a picture perfect environment for
competitive golf. And some very competitive golf was played on a very tough
course with long pristine fairways, cxxt grass everywhere, vicious bunkers,
some very tricky pin placements, demon role off the green hazards and some really tough tees (see on course at the BIT in 2010). You
could see the pressure of the competition written all over the faces of the
tour party (see faces of the 2010 tour).
And as expected a select few thrived while the rest of the field
progressively fell of the perch as the round went on. Actually, it appeared to be quite tight at the end of it all
because there were seven players within three strokes of each other. BC,
Nicko, Harry and Rodney all ended up on net 76 strokes, Emile ended up on net
75 strokes, and equal on net 74 strokes were Shanksy and The Cardinal. But it
wasn’t really close at all. Nope. Because the Bloke had a blinder of a round shooting an 89 off the stick
giving him a net 69 after his bandit handicap of 20 strokes. For anyone who
can add up, this was five strokes clear of the next best in the field
(Shanksy and The Cardinal on net 74), illustrating Steph’s outstanding and
superior performance on the day (see detailed results below). Hence, appropriate recognition and admiration was on display
at the presentations as event sponsor Min and last year’s champion Tony,
presented the perpetual BIT plate to Steph. “Miraculous, a beautiful day for golf, we all enjoyed ourselves, lets
do it again soon......” rambled Bloke very casually to the media in the
post presentation interview (see doorstop
interview with BIT 2010 Champion – Steph). As would be expected the
presentations recognised other exceptional performances including Shanksy and
The Cardinal in equal 2nd place, Emile in outright 3rd
place (Yes we know, we know.. it should
be 4th but we don’t always do that in this club. Only sometimes),
Nicko for his sensational longest drive and nearest the pin, Shags for his
brilliant longest drive and Jack, Fang and Tony for their outstanding nearest
the pins. That’s not to mention the recognition awards presented by event
sponsors Tombei and Nurse Min but you just have to see
those for yourself (see 2010 BIT
presentations). The committee congratulates Steph on his outstanding
performance giving him his second win in this most prestigious event (he also
won it in 2006). The committee also congratulates all other prize winners on
the day and wants to thank event sponsor Minnow in particular because without
his outstanding accommodation and facilities the event couldn’t be what it
is, another truly sensational must be at event. |
