HANDICAP Update - Qtr 1 2008
‘Club Champion Emile Goes Down Again’
Afheed Comes In Five Strokes: The
handicap analysis for the 1st quarter 1 2008 was released yesterday,
to reveal that 2007 Club Champion Emile has come in a further five strokes
since the beginning of the year. After reducing his handicap by a massive 4.3
strokes during 2007 (from 40.3 down to 36 strokes), Emile has gone on to
further reduced his handicap by 5.2 strokes to 30.8 (a rounded up handicap of
31). This was after a sensational 98 stroke game at Brighton followed by a 99
stroke game at
Teflon
Slips In Further:
Harry was another player who did well in 2007 (down from 28.8 to 26.2 strokes)
and has continued his good form in 2008. At the end of the first quarter, Harry
has reduced his handicap a further 2.5 strokes to 23.7 strokes (a rounded
handicap of 24). This was after a sensational 92 stroke game at Yarrambat in
February and then a 94 stroke game, again at Yarrambat, in March. “I wished I played like that during a major
event like the Anzac Day Medal” moaned Harry when his latest handicap was
announced. “Now, now Harry. Enough of that. Your aim should be a sub 20 handicap in
2008” suggested chief handicapper Brendan who was sick of the moaning. “I can understand what he is saying. With my
16 stroke handicap I haven’t won a major event in years” agreed Shanksy by
VoIP from his base in
Steph Goes Sub Twenty:
Another great performance in the first quarter of 2008 was Steph who finally
reduced his effective handicap to fewer than 20 strokes.
For the last year or so Steph’s handicap has wandered
between 20 and 21 strokes. In December last year his handicap was 19.8 strokes,
at which point he had a great round of 91 at Yarrambat. This pushed his rounded
handicap down to 19, the first time he had been sub twenty. Since then he has really
gone on with the job. He started 2008 by getting an 88 at Brighton and an 89 at
Steve Goes Back To Where He Belongs: Another sensational
performance in the first quarter of 2008 involved Steve who after twelve months
has returned to a handicap of 18 strokes. A year ago in March 2007 Steve was
maintaining a handicap of 18.4 strokes. Then, over a number of months his
handicap slipped out slowly to nineteen strokes and then onto to twenty
strokes, despite an excellent round of 92 when he won the SHIT at the Growling
Frog in November last year. By March this year Steve had slipped out to 19.7
strokes when he finally had a sensational round of 87 at Yarrambat. This
reduced his handicap by a full 1.6 strokes, back to
18.2, slightly better than where he was at the same time last year. “It was a necessary maintenance round
really. I was getting embarrassed with a handicap of twenty so I had to do
something” smiled Steve to the cameras at a recent doorstop interview. “Here
is another one who won a major event by letting their handicap drift out and I
was there to witness it” tapped out Shanksy jealously with a couple of
coconuts.
Mark
V Shaves Off Half: The only other player to reduce his handicap
so far in 2008 was, Mark V who’s handicap came in last year after an adjustment
made by the handicapping committee at the BIT in October. This year he
vindicated the committee’s decision at least twice. The first was in a
sensational round at Freeway in mid January where he had a round of 89. That
resulted in a 0.8 stroke handicap reduction. He then went onto illustrate the
point with a 94 at Freeway just two weeks later. “Yes I
was right in the zone at the time but I’ve fallen away since then” mumbled
Mark, trying to talk down the situation. The committee congratulates Mark on
his convincing performance in early 2008. “Now
there is a guy who could win the Anzac Day medal if he was in form” posted
Shanksy on his Facebook message board.
The
Benchmark Has Been Set for 2008: Members and associates.
These gentlemen, and I use the term loosely, have set the tone for the rest of
2008. Clearly the challenge is to emulate their performances by us all reducing
our handicaps in 2008. At this stage of the year, no member’s handicap has gone
out by a full stroke, although Tom’s and Brendan’s playing handicaps slipped out by one stroke just this week. So,
let’s stop the rot by us all playing better golf, more often in the next
quarter. The perfect opportunity is the Anzac Day Medal at the Growling Frog on
the 25th of April, and as the first nnomads Golf Club event of the
year, it is a must attend event. See you there!
