2008 nnomads Club Champion - The Captain |
Winner – BIT - October 2018 |
|
|
|
The 2008 nnomads Golf Club Champion December 31st 2008: Members,
associates and hangers on, ‘The Captain - Ricko’
has won the nnomads Golf Club Championship for 2008 The Year in Review: So how did he do it you ask? Well, during
2008 there were five nnomads Golf
Club championship sanctioned events including ‘The Anzac Day Medal’ (ADM) run in April, ‘The Participial Isabel Slape Memorial Trophy’ (PIS) run in July, ‘The Monarch of the Tulum’ (MOTT), run
in October ‘The Balnarring Invitational
Tournament’ (BIT) run in October, and ‘The Melbourne Cup Cup (MCC) run in
November. The nnomads Golf Club champion each year
is that player with the lowest average
net score at the end of the year across three nnomads
Golf Club championship sanctioned events. Mark led the field early: The
year started with Mark F’s sensational win in the Anzac Day Medal played at
the Growling Frog back in April. It was a one stroke win over Tim which put
Mark at the top of the table after the first championship event for 2008. “I thought I was in with a real chance
this year. My mistake was not going to South Australia in July” sighed Mark reflecting on what might have been. Min took the lead technically at the midpoint: Next on the nnomads Golf Club
championship calendar for 2008 was the PIS which was
run at McCracken Country Club and Victor Harbour Golf Club early in July.
This was where Ricko first burst onto the 2008
scene with his fourteen stroke win, yes I said
fourteen stroke win over Boz, a not so close second, not to mention the rest
of the field. It was a sensational performance by Ricko.
However, it was Min who took the lead on the club championship table with the
lowest average net score
across three cards from nnomads Golf Club
sanctioned events at that point in time.“It was nice to be on top for a while but Ricko
hadn’t played three sanctioned events at that stage so it was just a
technical lead” retorted Min trying to play down his achievement. Ricko moved at the MOTT: It was at the MOTT played at the wonderful Flinders Golf Club
in October where Ricko made his next move. Jack won
the tournament in a dramatic play-off with Tom in front of an adoring crowd.
But after playing in the MOTT Ricko had now
submitted the required three score cards from nnomads
sanctioned events which pushed him past Min to the top of the 2008
championship ladder. “Look if I was in
charge Ricko would have been hung, drawn and
quartered before tee off” smarted the Hanging
Judge when the results were announced by the Club committee. “And I took that man snapper fishing?”
exploded a horrified Ricko after hearing Jacks comments. Captained it off at the BIT: So
just to make sure, Ricko took out the BIT by two
strokes from professional bridesmaid Mark Vas at Cape Schanck Resort the
following day. This gave him an unassailable lead in the club championship
for 2008 even though there was still one Club sanctioned event to play.
Brendan won that last event; the Melbourne Cup Cup,
in very convincing fashion but it wasn’t enough to threaten the new champion.
“The competition was too tough this
year. That’s why I went for the Callaway crown instead” countered Brendan
as he realised he wasn’t in the running for 2008. “Did you say Mulloway, because if you’re going fishing, I’m in”
questioned an extremely excited Ricko who didn’t
quite hear what Brendan was mumbling about. Ricko reigns supreme: So, at the end of the nnomads Golf
Club championship competition for 2008 Ricko ended up with an average net score of
68.7 strokes across his three lowest nnomads Golf
Club sanctioned events. This was a full 5.6 strokes
ahead of the next group of players being Jack, Tom and Brendan, all on an
average of 74.3 strokes. “Look the
snapper were running early this year so I had a good feeling about it all.
And after bagging out with King George whiting at Port Vic with Leo in June I
felt just unbeatable” explained The Captain as he looked up the latest
tide times for Corny Point (see detailed results of championship for 2008). Toasted in Absentia: There were
only eight players at the final game of the year, held at Yarrambat, late in
December. But that was enough for a quorum so some important decisions were made.
The first motion on the agenda was a decision to make all beers free for the
final game of 2008, which all in attendance took full advantage of
immediately after the decision. “You
are joking aren’t you? We hopped into those beers well before the decision so
technically we applied it retrospectively” corrected Fritz after reading
the previous line. The other motion put up by Brendan involved removal of the
mulligan’s rule, something he has suggested previously a number of times. And
once again it was voted down five to three. “Now he shouldn’t be able to put that motion up again for at least a
couple of years” suggested Min as Brendan moaned in the background. “Well anyone who Not to be distracted, the important point
about this meeting was the toast to the new nnomads
Club Champion Ricko which occurred
a number of times during the afternoon’s post game proceedings. Ricko was of course not in attendance (had gone fishing),
so a photo provided by the Cardinal (sent by disk because he also wasn’t
there), was used as a surrogate Ricko. This allowed
the gathering to toast the new champion with his image clear in their minds. “I thought it was an effigy. That’s why I
tried to burn it” explained Tom as he fumbled with a lighter. “I’m just surprised he has a reflection in
that photo. I thought people from the dark side (South Australia) didn’t have
reflections” quizzed a wondering Steve gazing at Ricko’s
reflection on the trophy in the photo.
“Just how did we let this occur? They have taken back the Green Jacket and
now they have got our trophy” questioned Pete as he balked at yet another
toast to Ricko. “Thanks
guys for the gesture. I’m thinking of you all” lied
Ricko in a text message sent from a boat in the
middle of St Vincent’s gulf. “Well it
is all for the good of the club isn’t it” stated Mark in calming sort of
way. “No need for antidepressants here”
observed nurse Min as another chance to dispense medicines disappeared.
And so another chapter in the nnomads Golf Club
history comes to an end, being 2008 of course. Ricko
now joins an elite group of nnomads Golf Club
champions, the ultimate achievement for any nnomads
Golf Club member. He now takes the coveted ‘Golfing Git’ trophy from last year’s
winner Emile and holds it for the 2009 calendar year (at which point he needs
to return it to Victoria as quickly as possible, and at his cost, unless he
can win the championship back to back in 2009). The nnomads
Golf Club Committee sincerely congratulates The Captain on this truly great achievement and Brendan for is
great bladder control in 2008. “And may
you all catch a really nice fish in 2009” wished Ricko
as the Club Champion brought the December Club committee meeting to a close. |
