JACK TAKES SHIT AT ‘THE BAT’

Two weeks before the event an email arrived from the event sponsor ‘Shanksy’ who resides on the west coast of the USA. Am I correct to assume that the ‘Monarch of the Tullum  - Tom, is overseas at present he asked knowingly? If that is the case now is the time to run the SHanksy Invitational Tournament! Let’s do this event now before Tom gets back! And so it was… the SHIT for 2006 was hurriedly rescheduled from the planned 17th of June to the 3rd of June and Shanksy flew out to Australia a week or so earlier to supervise the event.

3rd June 2006: Hence it was a very select group of seven competitors that congregated on the first tee at Yarrambat Park mid morning on the third of June (as half of the potential field didn’t know the event was on or couldn’t get there).  Steph, Jack and Mark led the field away in the first group with Shanksy - event sponsor, Brendan - winner of the SHIT for the last two years, Harry - a hanger on and Tim - club champion for 2005 following up in the second group.

Roos Turn It on in Challenging Conditions: Now Shanksy had requested that the event was held at a ‘challenging course where there were plenty of kangaroos’! So Yarrambat Park was a logical venue and it didn’t disappoint. In fact as the two groups of competitors teed off down the first, there were over forty kangaroos sitting or lying down along the sides of the fairway. “But they aren’t doing anything! I thought they might at least hop around or something” commented Shanksy as the roos just ignored the passing players.  “You’ve been away too long Shanksy. That’s what kangaroos do when they live on a golf course – just sit back and take in the view between mouthfuls.”

But that is not what the players did.  After all they were competing for the most sort after nnomads Golf Club perpetual trophy in existence (see recently modified SHanksy Invitational Tournament trophy to right. A new base has been added to make room for previous and past winners making it a most impressive piece). “It is something I would be proud to put on my mantelpiece” confirmed Brendan before the event. Note: Before this event Brendan was the only person to ever win this trophy. He has held the trophy since the event’s inception in 2004.

Now this was a handicap event with a nearest the pin competition on every par three. While there wasn’t any rain to speak of, the wind certainly came into play on a number of holes making the conditions challenging on this ACR 73 course.  The Players were certainly tested and had to play to their handicaps or better to have a chance to win (see photos of the course and players).

Jack Maintains Recent Great Form: At the end of the game most of the competitors had fallen foul of the difficult conditions and challenging course, including club champion Tim (net 82), event sponsor Shanksy (net 81) and previous reigning champion for two years Brendan (net 80) who ended up the back markers in the event.  Out in front was Jack, ‘Happy Jack’ as the South Australian’s call him and happy he was. With 97 off the stick and an extremely generous handicap of 24, Jack ended up net 73 and square with the card. This was three strokes in front of equal second placegetters Harry and Mark (net 76) with Steph a further stroke behind in third (net 77).  “There was no secret on the day mate, I cheated that’s right… and had a good handicap I can tell youhe commented when interviewed by the media after the presentations (see post presentation interview with Jack – requires latest windows media player).  It should be noted that Jack has been on a winning streak since winning the ‘Anzac Trophy’ back in April. This was just another in a string of wins during the last month or two.  “Since his handicap went out to 24 he has used it to great effect” observed Harry during the presentations. “But I didn’t win anything for years and years” pointed out Jack who was holding on firmly to the trophy.

As usual Mark was extremely generous with his time during the presentations both as a prize recipient (he won one ball for equal 2nd and one ball for NTP on the 5th) and in providing the traditional ‘Mark background’ (see the presentation photos). “Yeah and I never win a ball normally. I was very pleased with my performance today” he beamed as he was presented with his prizes.

Reigning club champion Tim had a rough day on the longer holes but proved to be very accurate on the par threes taking out two of the four available NTPs. ‘Well I should get something for all that effort in driving down to here Melbourne and back home” he smiled when presented with his prizes.

Event Declared ‘Best Ever’: In his presentation speech event sponsor Shanksy declared that the 2006 event had been the ‘best ever’ since the event’s inception in 2004. “That new trophy is so good now that even I would like to win this event. I’ll be back. Mark my words” he declared as the celebrations finally wound up in the car park at the back of the club house.

The club committee congratulates Jack on his convincing win and congratulates the other prize winners – Mark, Tim and Harry on their various performances on the day.  The committee also thanks Shanksy for his attendance, who flew 24,000 kilometres to be there on the day – a big effort in anyone’s language.

And so went the second club championship event for the 2006 year.  The club champion for 2006 will be the Player with the lowest average net score at the end of the year across at minimum of three official nnomads Golf Club championship events.  It is calculated as follows:

The gross scores of each player's best three net scores from all Official nnomads championship events entered, are added together, resulting in the total gross score. The handicaps used to get these best three net scores are also added together, resulting in the total handicap. This is then subtracted from the total gross score, to give the players total net score. The total net score is then averaged, giving the players average net score. The Player with the lowest average net score at the end of the year will be the club champion. Entrants must attend a minimum of three Official nnomads Event competitions.

And it will be very interesting to see who is leading the championship year-to-date when the results are released at the end of the 2nd quarter. Prior to the SHIT it was Tom and the question is - Has Jack knocked ‘The Monarch’ off his throne?  Thus watch out for the next quarterly update (after June 30th) to be released soon.

PIS and BIT Next Events: The next officially sanctioned club championship event is the Patricia Isabel Slape memorial trophy (The PIS) for 2006 which will be run around Victor Harbour south of Adelaide on the 5th and 6th of August.  This is a two day event and there will definitely be a Victorian contingent going so contact Harry ASAP if you are interested. Following the PIS will be the Balnarring Invitational Tournament (The BIT) which is always run on the weekend after the grand final on the Mornington peninsular.  Centred at Min and Tom’s places in Balnarring, the BIT is always and big and sensational event.

So these are the dates you need in your diaries and make sure you attend. Remember - you have to compete in at least three club sanctioned championship events to be eligible for the club championship. So get involved.
