Tom
Bottoms Out at the Frog
There are many reasons we should be
grateful to Geoff and one of them was to bring Shanksy back to
2nd
December 2006: So
this time it was at the Growling Frog, a brilliant venue that really brings out
the best and worst in a golfer. As usual
the event was organised with such short notice that half of
Quality Field: But a
select and quality field was available to contest the second Shanksy
Invitational Tournament for 2006. After all, the trophy on offer is one of the
most sought after on the nnomads Golf Club circuit, particularly after recent
modifications, so a number of ‘heavies’ made themselves available on the day of
the competition. “The trophy is big and
bold and the girls like It. I can understand why people want to win it.”
explained Jack, the existing title holder, as he arrived at the event.
And
the high quality of the competition was clearly illustrated by the first group
off the tee which included the ‘existing title holder’ Jack, joined by ‘two
times previous winner’ Brendan, the ‘event sponsor and patron’ Shanksy and ‘2nd
place getter in the Melbourne Cup Cup, Steve.
Not
to be outdone, the second group off the tee was equally impressive, with the
2006 winner of the Monarch of the Tullum (MOTT), Tom, joining Harry, Min and
Fritz who hadn’t won anything recently but were very keen to.
A
Tough Wind Affected Course: Now the ‘Growling Frog Golf Course’ is
an ACR 73 rated 5,328 metre links course, which combined with the significant
wind on the day made for challenging yet pleasant conditions. As usual it was a
handicap event with a nearest the pin competition on every par three. The
players were again tested to the limit and had to play far better than handicap
to have a chance to win (see ‘On course’ photos)
and results at end of article.
Tom
Does a PB: And what do you know? Tom does a ‘personal best’ with 89 off the stick., never achieved before.
Combined with his ‘bandit’ handicap of 26, he ended up a full 10 strokes under
the card, on a net 63 strokes. This was eight strokes clear; I’ll say that
again, eight strokes clear of 2nd place getter Brendan on net 71
strokes and 3rd place getter Harry, on net 72. “It’s all a state of mind my friends.
Ba Ba knows” explained Tom as Jack handed over the Shanksy Invitational
Tournament trophy. “I’m just delighted to
be able to encourage such high quality up and coming talent.” added
Shanksy, who felt he should say something at this stage of the proceedings.
Which was lucky really, as there was not much to say after Tom also won two of
three ‘nearest the pin’ competitions with Brendan winning the remaining NTP
(see The Presentations). Yet the crowd
looked on as ‘Sir Bumpy’ entertained the media (see photos of The crowd).
So
Who Won The Club Championship For 2006?: Now the big question at this stage was who
was going to win the club championship for 2006? The final championship event
had now been completed and it was all down to the calculation of the results.
The nnomads Golf Club club champion for 2006 would be the player with the lowest average net score at the end of
the year across at minimum of three official nnomads Golf Club championship
events. It is calculated as follows:
The gross scores
of each player's best three net scores
from all Official nnomads championship events entered, are added together, resulting
in the total gross score. The handicaps used to get these best three net scores are also added
together, resulting in the total handicap. This is then subtracted from the
total gross score, to give the players total net score. The total net score is
then averaged, giving the players average net score. The Player with the lowest average net score at the end of
the year will be the club champion. Entrants must attend a minimum of three Official nnomads
Event competitions.
Well of
course no one was up to doing that calculation after a few beers, and so
the result was left up in the air until Gordon, our beloved club handicapper,
club record keeper, club treasurer and club webminstrel, was able to do the
final calculations at the official end of the 2006 year (published 31st
of December, suitably four weeks after the event). The Club Committee
congratulates Tom on his fine win in the second SHIT for 2006 and looks forward
to seeing his new and lower handicap in 2007 (as it was bound to be slashed
after this outstanding performance).
Until
He Comes Again: And so the ‘Shanksy Invitational Tournament’
was put to rest until Shanksy visits our shores again. Note: For those that were not aware, the Shanksy Invitational
Tournament is run whenever Shanksy, who normally lives in
But
the really spooky part is that the SHIT has once again, had a huge impact on
the final outcome of the nnomads Golf Club Championship in 2006. In fact it has
changed the club championship landscape forever. In the SHIT #2 2006, which
wouldn’t have happened without Geoff, Tom has got .as ‘low as he has ever been.’ The question is – ‘Has he bottomed out’? ‘Can Tom do better than 89 off the stick?’
Members and associates, these are the questions for 2007, see you there!
