GMAC – 2nd place

Freddie Five Iron - NTP

There has been one major nnomads event run in this last quarter and a brilliant event it was.

It was The Monarch of the Tullum held at Cape Shank in April and ‘The Captain’ was winner on handicap with a Net score of 67. Well done Captain who is now the reigning Monarch until next year. “I am just warming up for the 2nd half” he announced while crushing Nurse Min’s hand as he was  presented with the Monarch’s glove for 2005 and a sun visor personally signed by Western Australian champion golfer Nick Ahern, presently ranked 35th in the world. “My close mate Nick gave it to me when I was in WA” claimed Nurse Min at the presentations (but the real story was that Mild Colonial Boy won it in an ABC radio competition in which you had to ring up and tell the best golf joke).

GMAC came in second with a net score of 72 and well in front of the next group of three on net 77 (Nurse Min, Curtis and The Bloke). “I’m happy with a placing, without a major sponsor, I need the balls” he admitted to the press when interviewed after the event.  Other notable performances included Rubber Man (no photo) who won the longest drive and Freddie Five Iron who won the NTP.

The committee congratulates all prize winners in this prestigious event.

Maroon Breasted Warbler - Winner of men’s Uralba Open 2005

JK - Winner of women’s Uralba Open 2005

A major annual interstate event, The Uralba Open’, was run in Canberra on the long weekend in June and again it was a closely fought competition.

The Maroon Breasted Warbler won the men’s event after a sudden death nearest to the pin play-off against Gorgi giving him his first win after nearly 10 years of trying. “It’s good to be on that bloody thing after all these years. I wasn’t sure I would ever get there” he sighed with relief as King Billy presented him with the trophy. JC won the ladies event with a 38 Nett giving her yet another slot on the trophy. “Without any Victorian competition it was a walkover.” she stated boldly as she was handed the trophy once again.

Carol B won the ladies longest drive and Kennie won the men’s. ‘Rodger the Lodger’ won the NTP, Father and son team Mild Colonial Boy and The Dream snared the four-ball competition and the Mexicans (Victorians) stole the Yarra Uralba Tequila Challenge Cup on the Saturday albeit with some ring-ins due to a small Victorian Team turn out.

… And The Records Tumbled: Regular attendees at Uralba would be aware that the course record has been a particularly sought-after title. Steve V has traditionally been the holder, setting the pace on more than one occasion over the years. Last year GMAC equalled Steve’s record of 34 for the nine arduous holes but didn’t manage to beat it. Well readers, would you believe it! Steve V did it again this year setting the new course record at 33. Roger the Loger and George marked his card making the result official. “We tried to add a stroke here and there but he was onto us.” moaned George later as King Billy ratified the result.

The other record of note involved GMAC who managed to avoid playing any golf of any type during his four day visit. This was despite lugging his clubs all the way up to Canberra and back to Melbourne. “He didn’t raise a club the entire weekend” explained Nurse Min when asked to verify the story. “Look, I thought my clubs deserved a holiday” He admitted under interrogation by officials on the issue.
