Strong
Field Contests Final Event for the Year
Two
of Three Contenders Make the Cut: There were only three real contenders for the 2005 Club
Championship as players teed off in this event – Ricko (early leader after
winning Monarch of the Tullum and a showing great
form at the PIS 05), Tim (who emerged late after his follow up win at the PIS
in 2004 and 2005) and
Brendan (who has performed consistently throughout the year, was in top four in
all club events and supported a plunging handicap over the year). Ricko unfortunately was not able to contest
the SHIT ‘05 after contracting a severe bout of ‘moving back to
A
Slick 7 Slide off the 1st Tee: So it was an extremely
select and important group of players that stepped up to contest this event for
2005. Tim and Brendan were joined by Steph and Steve to make up the first group
on the 1st tee with Tom, Mark and Fritz
following up in the second group up. “We
may not be able to win the championship but we can sure win the Perpetual SHIT
trophy” smiled Tom at the beginning of the contest and all agreed!
Perfect
But Challenging Conditions: Yarra Bend was in fantastic condition and the
temperature warm and comfortable (see On Course
Conditions). But the seriousness of
the event put pressure on all players paving the way for a fierce competition
over the 18 holes. “You could really see the pressure when the players were teeing
off. Their feet positions were quite
informative” explained Harry who provided this year’s Player Swing Analysis. Note:
Harry also provided a mobile media and on-course drinks services with his
specially equipped golf buggy (Note: He was unable to play due to a recent
operation to remove his gallbladder or at least that was his excuse at the time). “If we
infect Harry with something else next year he might do the drinks again” suggested
Mark at one point in the proceedings.
Brendan & Tim Lead Field Home: Well the final outcome proved to be
close. Tom put in a great performance
with 99 off the stick and a net 72 putting him into third place (but you get
nothing for third). Tom also won the NTP
(which you do get something for – 1 ball. Well done Tom!). Tim achieved second place with 102 off the
stick and a net 72 (in part due to his generous handicap of 30 and in part to
an unlucky last putt (see
Tim and Brendan’s Final Putts).
However second place did get something – a couple of balls and hearty
congratulations. In first place was a
very worthy winner in Brendan who got 85 off the stick and 71 strokes net, a
brilliant performance considering his recently reduced handicap of 14
strokes. Brendan thus won the perpetual SHIT trophy for 2005 and three balls for
his efforts (see The Presentations). The Club Committee congratulates Brendan on
his impressive win in the final event for the 2005 year. “Well
you may as well use last year’s photo.
Clearly I didn’t need to come over after all” emphasised Shanksy
when informed of the results by satellite phone.
So Who Won The Club Championship?: After the presentations players and
others toasted the three winners of the day, Brendan, Tim and Tom with the
remnants of Harry’s mobile refreshment service (which was somewhat limited at
this stage of the day). “So what does
this outcome do for the club championship?” questioned Fritz. “We
will have to wait for the calculation. We can’t tell until Gordon crunches the
numbers” confirmed Harry. “But it has got to be Brendan or Tim based on
that performance doesn’t it?” added Steve. And so it went until the group
eventually broke up at the end of a wonderful event still wondering who the
club champion was for 2005.
Members Note: The
SHIT in 2006 is likely to be a mid year event when Shanksy ‘The Patron’ will be
in attendance (in and around the Uralba Open). Thus watch for further
announcements in the first quarter of 2006.
