XPAT WINS FROM AFAR There were 44
Members and Associates who made it onto the ladder this year (by submitting
at least one score card from any game they played at any course anywhere in
the world). Cardinal and Stavros Led Early: The top position on the ladder changed a number of times
during the year. 2004 started with The Cardinal dominating the early points. He
maintained that lead until the football season kicked in (when golf becomes a
lower priority for him). At that point Stavros the Greek started to catch him
using his usual sheer quantity of cards
method (You see you don’t have to win to get points on the ladder.
Just submitting a card gets points and turning up to designated events gets event bonus points). Stavros hit the
front in August but then pulled up lame (claimed to hurt his back or
something) and was essentially out of the competition for two months.
Meanwhile Do Johnson who is living in sunny California, discovers the
controversial nnomads Golf Club rule that golf
games played outside the country get a special bonus point per card if the
scores are submitted from outside the country (must be submitted while out of
the country). Thus Don essentially gets double
points every time he plays. Where players in a local game get 1 point per 18
holes, Don gets 2 points per 18 holes. In addition he was playing 18 holes
almost once per week. Expat Takes the Lead Late in the Year: Well by early December Don was on top of the ladder without
playing a single competition event during the calendar year [Note: The Club
ladder competition is run from the 1st of January to the 31st
of December each year.] At that time he had a 10
point lead over The Cardinal and Stavros but it was the lack of attendance in
club competitions that really got the members murmuring. “I agree with The Cardinal. How do you win the cup without playing in
a single event?” asked Stavros, knowing quite well that the rules
allowed, almost encouraged, Expats to participate in the nnomads
Golf Club competition from their overseas location. “Cricky, he will do it again if we don’t
change the rules.” suggested Nurse Min. “And the cost of shipping the Don Overcomes Member Concerns: But in the end Don Johnson surprised everyone by suddenly
arriving in Australia in mid-December to play the nnomads
Golf Club Festive Season circuit (a
series of games and competitions run over the December / January period). The
SHanksy Invitational Tournament was organised (See
Article on Website) which was an official nnomads
Golf Club competition event, thus attracting event bonus points. This meant
that Don had played in at least one Club competition event. He then went on
prove he was human by playing at Flinders, Croydon and the Growling Frog (where he was seen
repeatedly hitting his ball into the same tree). “Funny, I tell you….. You should have seen the dint in the tree.”
commented Thombei as he recalled the incident
later. [NOTE: Thombei has produced a PowerPoint
presentation (8 Mb) about Don’s Tour Down Under. It has a great sequence
about The Tree! So
contact Thombei for a copy if you are interested].
Top Female had Highest Strike Rate: Robyn 1 was top female in 2004 gaining 27.5 points and 6th
place on the ladder overall, a sensational performance. Her statistics are
amazing. She only played 3 games but played in four separate Club
competitions (as one game was both Callaway and handicap in one). She won all
four competitions she entered, also winning a total of 8 balls. This gave her
a strike rate of 200% or an average of winning 2 balls per competition game.
“Now that is a great strike rate and
particularly for someone who only plays twice per year. I need to play less golf based on that
performance.” commented Thombei when discussing
Robyn’s performance. Honourable Mentions: Now there
were a number of members who deserve mentions including Ro who ended up
winning the junior title at the Ablaru Wave 2. This
was enough to give him a strike rate of 150%. The committee congratulates Ro
on a fine performance in 2005. “Yeah
and I would have won that event if you had let people under 30 compete in the
real event.” he said recently at a BBQ. Another member deserving of a
mention was Billy Bob Thornton, who ended the year on a 100% strike rate. Now
Billy Bob only played in three competition games this year but by winning the
BIT again (two years in a row and where he gained 3 balls), it was enough for
him to average winning 1 ball per competition event (which is a great
performance in anyone’s language). The committee congratulates Billy Bob on a
wonderful performance in 2004. Now Stavros is worth further mention because
he is entered the highest number of score cards of any local member (62 x 9 hole cards) in 2004. He played in 32 competition games,
more than any other member, and managed to win 8 of them, giving him a strike
rate of 21%. He ended second on the ladder in 2005 with 58 points, a great
all round performance. “Yeah and he
paid out more money than anyone else too. He really subsidises those who win
the balls.” said GMAC with a gleeful treasurer’s look. The committee
congratulates Stavros on a great performance in 2004.Now The
Cardinal also rates further mention (winner of last year’s competition). Of
the 23 competition games he played, he won 13 balls (equal only with Curtis),
giving him a strike rate of 57%. He was on top of the ladder for a good part
of the year and ended up third at the end of the year on 51.5 points. This
was despite not being available during the football season or the nnomads Golf Club Festive
Season circuit. “Yeah well I lost
interest there for a while but next year will be different. I’ll be back!”
he said when interviewed for this article. “But someone has to tell the Cardinal to return the trophy. Its club
property.” stated an unnamed committee member at the presentations. Curttus Puts in a Quality Performance: Now the stand out player for 2005, other than Don Johnson of course, was Curtis. He submitted 29
cards, played in 12 competition games and maintained a strike rate of 108% by
equalling The Cardinal and winning 13 balls. In fact there was no other member
who put in such a consistent performance in 2004. He came home very strongly
winning the SHanksy Invitational Tournament and the
Growling Frog event within 2 weeks (including at least one NTP). He ended up
4th on the ladder overall despite not playing in the competition
for much of the year. The committee congratulates Curtis on a truly wonderful
performance in 2004. Stiff Competition Expected in 2005: The interesting thing readers, is that the 2005 competition
is off and running, and low and behold Curtis is off to a brilliant start.
But he is likely to have stiff competition in 2005 and particularly after the
recent round of handicap adjustments (see January Update to be published
soon). Members with significant potential in 2005 include The Bloke (great
consistent form in recent times), Rubber Man (with a significant handicap
adjustment), Pup (with a significant handicap adjustment), Thombei the Mist (with a handicap adjustment), and the
Hanging Judge (with significant handicap adjustment). They will compete
against the current top five (Don Johnson, Stavros the Greek, The Cardinal,
Curtis and GMAC) breaking the competition wide open. And of
course there are many other members who could be up in the rankings
(not to mention Nurse Min, Freddie Five Iron, Billy Bob Thornton, The
Captain, The Hanging Judge, Markus Octavious, Turbo
T, Robyn 1, Andi, J, Robyn 2, Colac K, Colac J, King Billy just to name a
few). That assumes they play a little golf and submit their score cards to
