October 4th: A strong
field of 12 players congregated on the 10th hole of the Dunes to
contest the Balnarring Invitational Tournament (The BIT) for 2003. GMAC, Nurse Min (The Host), Rubber
Man and Curtis lead the field away in the afternoon’s competition.
Stavros the Greek, The Cardinal, Cam and The Bloke followed in
the second group with Billy Bob Thornton, Freddie Five Iron, The
Hanging Judge and The Captain rounding up the field in the final
group. Tough Golf on a Tough Course, In Tough Conditions: It was a very comfortable 18 degree, almost windless,
overcast day just made for playing golf. The first group got away without
incident and almost made it 100 metres before attracting the attention of the
Course Marshal. Yeah you tell him mate, He needs to be told.
He’s like that! the gallery yelled in encouragement as the Marshal rushed
off down the fairway in his red buggy to tell Rubber Man not to drive
the buggy recklessly off the fairway and into the rough! Rubber Man
(shown left), didn’t s Now that was
lucky because Stavros the Greek and The Cardinal were onto
their 2nd buggy after blowing up their first one within 30 seconds
of driving it down the road. Rubber Man and Curtis confused the
Marshal by each organising a buggy and ending up with two, each different to
the one they had been booked into (which The Bloke and Cam were already
driving). As a result, the course administration did notice the presence of the nnomads
Golf Club on their course. To their credit they didn’t panic and handled the
crisis rather well. The Bunkers Were Vicious and Came into Play Immediately: The Dunes is a beautiful links course with little water and
a lot of bunkers. Set in the sand dunes at the back of Rye, this lush
undulating course has a lot of bunkers and has bunkers everywhere. The many
bunkers on the course came into play almost immediately with both Stavros
the Greek and The Cardinal teeing off straight in to the bunkers
on the 10th. By the end on the game most players were well versed
in the use of the sand wedge. Long Fairways and Hard, Fast Greens Tested Payer Patience: The par 5s were long, the par 3s were challenging, the greens
were hard, undulating, large and lighting fast. Pin placements were vicious
and the holes were cut cleanly making precise accurate putting a must. Most
players experienced some pain on the putting green at some stage of the
competition. Up to the challenge, a number of players broke through resulting
in some spectacular drives, fairway shots and putts (including a monster putt
from GMAC at one stage). As the game played out, some very good performances
started to appear. Sergeant at Arms was
Active: Cam, the Sergeant at Arms for the day, did a
darn good job. He was seen castigating Freddie Five Iron in no uncertain
terms for hitting a ball over his head and later hopped into The Cardinal for
rudely driving beyond a player who was having a shot on the fairway, himself
of course. The committee
wants to thank Cam particularly for his role in keeping the players in step
and focused on the game during the afternoon. It’s a dirty role but someone has to do it. Cam said as he walked
into the clubhouse bar. The Cardinal had a different take on the
incident and protested his innocence throughout. I was just seeing if my ball was in the bunker. Youve got to keep
the game moving Cam! he said in his defence. Deserving Winners on The Day: The
event was both a handicap and Callaway event. The winner on handicap was to
be the runner up for the competition and the winner of the Callaway was to be
the overall winner of the tournament for 2003. After all
groups had returned to the clubhouse, and after the fastest beer in history,
the competitors retired to Nurse Mins for the presentations and
refreshments. There were a number of players smiling, obviously pleased with
their performances on the day. While the
final scores were calculated with essential help from the laptop, Nurse Min’s
hospitality shone through. The hot nibbles went down a treat with the
Sustagen the players were drinking to re-hydrate themselves after the game. Cam, Curtis and The
Cardinal Took out the NTPs: There were
three nearest the pin competitions (to the credit and good organization by
the Dunes establishment). Cam, Curtis and The Cardinal, each
received a ball for their efforts and the heartiest of congratulations from
the gallery in attendance at the presentations. The Cardinal confirmed
the prizes were indeed real golf
balls, to the comfort of the other winners (centre photo below). The Bloke
had to accept a ball on Cam’s behalf. Where were you Cam? The
committee would like to thank ‘The Bloke for stepping in at the last
moment to cover for that rude bastard Cam, for the presentations and
the photo shoot (Readers will note we had to borrow The Bloke’s body
for our photo as Cam didn’t attend the presentations shown right. Billy Bob Takes Out Winner on Handicap: On his first appearance at the BIT Billy Bob Thornton
was runner up, winning the event on handicap with a gross score of 108 and a
net score of 78. “You can’t drink out
of it but its shiny. he said as Nurse Min presented him with the
trophy. However, with 4 Give ups and 2 off to the pubs Tim could only manage
middle of the field in the Callaway. The Bloke was
2nd on handicap and was particularly hard done by missing out by a
stroke after his handicap dropped 2 strokes after a blinding round of 90 at
Yarra Bend the previous week. “Billy
Bob had a blinder last week too! And his score wasn’t considered. I’ll go to
the appeals committee. he said as reached for another Sustagen. Jokes, just jokes. he said as he took
another mouthful. Curtis (95) and The Hanging Judge (100) were equal third with
a net 80. Curtis blew out with a 54 on the way out but held it
together for a 41 on the way in. The Judge was hard
done by all day coming 2nd in the Callaway and 2nd
off-the-stick. You don’t just come to
get trophies. He said. It’s the
thrill of the game! Curtis Wins Convincingly Overall: The overall winner of The
BIT in 2003 had to win the Callaway competition, an excellent way of
creating an equal playing field among players of differing levels and playing
states. Yay Sustagen! Last year’s
winner off the stick (didn’t have that competition this year), Curtis
with a net 72 (95 / 23) won the Callaway convincingly by two strokes from The
Hanging Judge (100 / 25) and The Cardinal (110 / 35) on a net 75. Curtis
was absolutely delighted. It makes it
worth coming all these years when you finally win such a prestigious event as
the SHIT, I mean the BIT he said as he struggled to get the trophy from The
Cardinal, last year’s overall winner. My
preciousssss.” said The Cardinal as he
very slowly loosened his grip and handed the cup to him. Curtis got
six pars, five bogies, one give up and only one off
to the pub during the game, an excellent performance under the conditions. Note: It is not uncommon for
previous winners to have trouble giving the perpetual trophy back at the next
event. To overcome this problem the Club committee sanctioned the
introduction of a perpetual plate for the winner of the BIT on handicap (as
seen with a very happy Billy Bob who is holding it upside down). Plates don’t have handles. Explained Nurse
Min. It is easier to pry it out of
their hands at the ceremony the following year. A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL: After a
very enjoyable presentation ceremony (which went on for some time), the
players agreed to reassemble next year, on the weekend after the grand final, on the peninsular at the designated golf course,
(to be determined by the club committee in due course). Readers, this is a
date you should be putting into your diaries now, the weekend after the grand
final 2004. See you there! |
