The final positions on the 2003 nnomads
Golf Club Premiership Ladder (the Club’s annual order of merit), have now
been validated by the Committee. There were 19 members who made it onto the
ladder in 2003 (by submitting at least one score card from any game they
played at any course during the year or by participating in a nnomads Golf Club event that attracts an ‘event bonus’
point). A THREE-WAY RACE GMAC led the field for much of the year winning 7 of his 29
nine games and gaining 5 NTPs. This gave him a strike rate of 41% and a total
47.5 points for the year. Unfortunately, GMAC was hit by a bad bout of non-arrival syndrome in the last few
weeks of the year giving The Cardinal an opportunity to get the jump on him. Stavros the Greek ended up second on the 2003 ladder using the
sheer number of games approach. “You
get half a point for just turning up. So I turn up a lot. It’s the only way I
can get anywhere on the ladder.” he said when interviewed. Stavros won 7
of his 44 games and gained 1 NTP giving him a hit rate of 18%. He ended up
half a point in front of GMAC on 48 points for the year. “But the strike rate statistics don’t
reflect the real situation.” he was heard complaining to GMAC. “They should only relate to official club
games, not every bloody card you submit.” In the end The Cardinal came home very strongly in the second
half of the year and particularly after the football season finished. This
was after languishing in the middle of the list for much of the year. “It is a matter of priorities.” he
explained to our roving reporter. “Once
the Dons were knocked out there wasn’t much else to do. Cricket is like
watching paint dry so what do you do in the spring?” The Cardinal ended
up well ahead of the field with a total point score of 59 (11 above second
place). He won 12 of his 30 games and gained 3 NTPs. This gave him a strike
rate of 50%, an excellent performance overall. However, The Cardinal’s meteoric rise to the top of the leader
board didn’t come without controversy (see article on web site
"Financial Deals give Cardinal the Points! The Battle For The Ladder
Heats up!") “It was a hot issue at the time but he argued strongly at the pub, I
mean the Committee hearing”. said club The Captain when asked to comment.
“At the time, the Committee decided to
take the money so he got the points. You have got to give credit where credit
is due. The Cardinal got the points. How he got them is irrelevant. |
Markus Octavious ended the year with
the best strike rate in the club, 133%. While he only submitted 3 cards for
the year, his win at the PUTSI in May, where he gained an event bonus and two
balls for winning, was enough to put him into the league of champions (those
with 100% + hit rate after 12 months). “After
May I didn’t want to wreck my strike rate so I just didn’t put in any cards.
But I thought I would get at least a trophy or something.” said Markus
after missing out at the presentations. The Bloke and Cam both had strike rates of 50% or over, a good
effort in anyone’s books. However, the committee is aware that both players
regularly play without submitting their scorecards and has issued them both
with a warning for 2004. “You can
submit a score from anywhere and at any time if you have net access.”
said GMAC. “There is no excuse for
either of them or anybody else for that matter.” Stavros was also
scathing. “The Bloke didn’t submit his
92 at Yarra Bend. It distorts his handicap and the ladder. We have got to get
these bastards to comply.” NEW AWARENESS &
EDUCATION CAMPAIGN: The Committee has since implemented an awareness and education
campaign aimed to ensure club members and associates know they can submit any
card from any game they play anywhere, by simply submitting their scores at
the website and following the instructions. “They can win balls too!” said GMAC when interviewed by the media
at the launch of the campaign “So long
as there are three or more players and they pay the $1 per person game fee,
they can be in the competition for the balls. They just have to send in the
money. We will then send out the balls to the winners who will also get the
appropriate points on the Premiership Ladder. It is as simple as that and
everyone can get involved.” DrummondBase
PRESENTATION The Cardinal was presented with the nnomads
Golf Club Premiership Cup at DrummondBase during
the long weekend in January. “Ooooh good.
Something new and shiny to hold and stroke.” he said as he posed for the
media. Readers will note that The Cardinal has been on edge since having to
pass the nnomads GC Perpetual Peninsular Cup to Curtis
at the BIT in October 2003 (see article on web site "Read
a bit about the BIT in our bit about the BIT 2003".). It was clear
that The Cardinal thought this was a worthy substitute. “It was a wonderful event but we would never have let him win in the
ACT.” said King Billy as he peered over The Cardinal’s shoulder at the
trophy. The committee would like to congratulate The Cardinal on his win in
2003 and invites all members to make it hard for him to win again, by
participating vigorously in 2004. So, get those score cards in people. 2004
is underway. |
